Hi all,

Purchased a 7970 the other day( (VT3XD).
Fitted the card last night no problem.

Every since i've fitted it there is a strange "buzzing" noise coming from the card. It's only noticable when my system is stressed (e.g. playing BF3).

At first I thought it was the fans, but a quick test of turning them turning them up in CCC showed that not to be the case. I have reseated the card, and reseated several other surrounding components.

Any ideas what could be causing it, I don't want to RMA it after just 1 day, but it's quite audible, I wondered if it could be power related, and when the voltage increases so does the noise?

Regards,
Chris.

Coil whine, run Heaven 3.0 for a few hours and it should settle down.
What PSU have you got as sometimes they can cause abnormal amounts of coil whine?

Does it sound like this squeaking sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYIPp9Wa9o8
Or is it a Electrical buzzing/humming sound, like a electrical sound, like a water cooling pump noise, kind of!

Mine had the same noise in that video clip, it stoped after a while! but now i get a buzzing noise. annoying, but once you have sound turned up, u can't hear it.

Thanks for the reply.

At first it sounded the same (yesterday), but this has now gone. It has now been replaced by a buzzing noise, but it's audible, I'll try and do a recording to show the noise, it only does it under load.

It seems to be a common problem with 7970, they must be using cheap VRM components or something...

It's the main reason why I replaced mine as I planned to eventually go watercooling and it would have been the loudest thing in the case by a mile, simply scrolling web pages with smooth scrolling on sent it off. Unbelievably irritating.

Was just reading a post from another site here:-

http://forums.pureoverclock.com/vid...331-7970-making-buzzing-noise-under-load.html

Seems to explain the issue pretty well. Is the only option to RMA or does it go away over time?

Thanks

I wouldn't have thought it would get better over time but some on here claim it does, mine certainly didn't.

I replaced it with an Asus DCII 680 not heard a squeak out of it under even the heaviest load and it's under water now, I'll be reluctant to buy reference cards in future if squealing is this common.

my latest card has coil whine too, but only if i go over Stock volts, which i've only done once !!!

i was too scared to go over stock volts for more than about a minute :D

i'm on max AMD CATALYST OC which is fine for me, whatever the case, this card seems much stronger/ stable than my last one.

i like the 7970 but it's not as strong as my GT 8800, that was as strong as an OX and survived loads of overclocking/ punishment.

You mean your 7970 isn't as newb proof? :p
