Window Tinting?

Bad angle, but mine are probably at the limit for the front. Was purchased like this. Not yet been pulled over since having it.

Very bad angle. I can only really see the rear.

Hmm, I was told they were legal when I bought it - I did have a read about tints and I saw it was illegal for a car trader or dealer to sell a car with illegal tints. Guess it can be tested at a garage if they have the kit?

Pull them over in the normal way with blue lights. If they're obviously illegal than could issue a VDRS or FPN. If they're not completely obvious then I would need to get a traffic unit who will test with a kit. The few times I have dealt with illegal tints, the drivers are well aware they're not legit and it's pretty blatent.

Out of interest, what training have you had so you can deal with such matters?

What training would he need to tell if something is transparent or opaque? if its not entirely obvious he gets somebody with the kit to test it so the can be no argument, if it is obvious then they would be stupid to try and fight it.

He wasn’t born knowing what level of tints is legal or not, all i want to know is how has he acquired this knowledge, what else can he pull you over for.

I can only assume the level of knowledge and training burnesy has is much less than a proper traffic officer and i simply want to know how his competency is tracked / tested.

I'd expect nothing less from Motors. I have no formal training in this, unlike RPU officers. I only know what I know through knowledge gained by ex-RPU officers who I work with. You always have the right to appeal or contest if you think I've made a mistake, but if I think I might be wrong, I'm much more likely to give you the benefit of the doubt rather than do unnecessary paperwork.

So you would issue a fine with no test whatsoever? What if they contest it and take them off?

I've never had to issue a FPN, the drivers listened and seemed genuine so a VDRS was all I issued. If I did think I needed to FPN, I'd either call a traffic unit or if none were available I'd take photos, but then I'd probably just summons instead.

It's hardly the spanish inquisition, it's a straight up question out of personal interest.

I've seen quite a few officers in the past with hardly any training trying to read people the riot act for things they don't fully understand, the bottom line really is one of wasting peoples time.

I value my time and try not to waste others'. If in doubt it's easy to call up an RPU officer and get guidance which I've done on many an occasion.

Am I the only one who is perhaps slightly concerned that volunteers are driving around in police cars pulling people over and making judgement calls in things they have no formal training in

Just because there isn't formal training doesn't mean there isn't competency. There is plenty of informal training from officers who have done the job for a decade or more, is that less valuable than formal training?

it doesn’t take a genius to work out that some ones front windows are too dark.

im sure there is a grey area but i doubt someone would get pulled over if its questionable unless the officer is carrying the equipment to test it

Out of interest and slightly off topic, is a volunteer police position now a pre-requisite to a paid position?

How long have Specials been allowed to use blue lights for, because if the driver refuses to stop you can not pursue him.

IMHO it will look **** if you do it yourself.
But feel free to prove me wrong - I await the results!

Is this on the Impreza Wagon?

Yes it is. I would like to give it a go, but I am likely to mess up first time round. However it's something I want to do, hey I might get lucky and do an excellent job.
