Does it really cost 28k per olympic security guard?

I hope there were clauses in the contract so the government gets half its investment back, for what its worth.

Have you seen public sector contracts? there are never penalties for the suppliers. Metronet debacle anyone? What about the inflated costs of the Olympics, don't you think there were contracts in the first place there? What was the result? Just ended up overpaying 3x to get it done.

The gov is not going to get anything back, because they don't care, it's not their money, they just want to get the job done and get the credit for saving the day (and some directorship on the board of G4S later on..).

not the gov it was locog, the games company that is managing the games.

IIRC most of those 10 000 recruits only get paid £8.50 p/h, so it is clear that they are exploiting them while management etc get all the money.

actually thats a good wage for security work in the uk, saw a job for g4s at media city in manchester and they where only paying £7.40 an hour.

security work isnt great pay even though you are risking your health to baby sit someones property.

The lolympics is a tax-payer funded Corporate junket with some track and field thrown in, of course they're going to waste as much of our money as possible.

You missed the part in the news where the head huncho of G4S claims he's going to make a loss on the deal.

and this is how government contracts end up costing 4 times what they should. because companys undercut each other to the point of making a loss then go cap in hand to the people they got the contract from.

maybe if people where forced to stick to there contract costs more closely things like this wouldnt end up running over or have idiotic management costs attached just to make up the numbers.

Not surprised after what has happened... They say any publicity is good publicity but in their case I really doubt it. Shot them selves in the foot for future deals...

I've been getting called out on my rest days on double time to work at the hotels the female football teams are staying in. G4S have made a right **** up, not that I'm complaining, surrounded by athletic women and getting paid overtime for it. Win.

they are getting £8.50 an hour, and as i said above thats not bad for security work as the vast majority are payed just above min wage levels.

still a poor wage for risking your health though, but like most jobs that arnt fashionable the pay will always be poor.

The point of the thread is the bid doesn't sound low at all. It's £28k per guard getting paid like 5% of that amount and the rest as administrative overheads and (non) profit apparently.

I worked in the olympic grounds when it was being built and there security is intense, theres 4-6 guards on each entrance/ exit and begs checks, hand and retinal scanners, metal detectors ,an entire building dedicated to passes and check with site inductions and safety reg briefings, when i frist went in the room was full and they do 4 a day for new staff so you can imagine the cost never mind the public liability.

Nut and bolt for Ford Fiesta 20p

Nut and bolt for Harrier jet £200

Security guard at Tesco £8 per hour

Security guard London 2012 £28K

Either they are stupidly over paid or those of us drafted in from the forces are being stupidly under paid. I'll let you decide.

I'm here with lads that, due to the hours they're having to do, work out to be getting paid just over £2 an hour while they're here.

It riles me when you hear about tube and bus drivers getting an extra £500 bonus during the Olympic period while we're having to cancel £500 holidays to compensate for a lack of manpower.

Kevlar, general security equipment, training, defensive weapons, metal detectors.

Many a reason, nothing solid, but it's logical.

Don't forget the bubbly at the shareholders' meeting. Gotta have a bit of bubbly at the shareholders' meeting.
