Why is the phrase "to be honest (tbh)" so popular on this forum?

To be honest I find it quite irritating, because to be honest it adds nothing to any sentence in which it is included.

The only genuine use for which I can think of it would be if the person was a known liar and wishes to emphasize that this time they are being truthful, and to be honest I doubt that this is why the majority of people use it.

With that said, to be honest if I'm missing something here then I'd welcome any input on why it is used with such frequency.

I don't think it is this forum specifically. Just a common phrase, thats all. While as you pointed out it doesn't add anything to a sentence, it does no harm either

It's a colloquialism. It's a bit pointless to get in a flap about it, people don't always converse with perfect linguistic brevity. Think of it as flavour text to give you an insight into the subconscious workings of a poster's cognition.

Or, wind your neck in and go about your day. Whatever. :p
