Hey, so im looking out for a first car, I want to spend 10k or less on a used car, I live in London if that should affect your thoughts, I want a sporty/classy car also Ive looked at cars like Audi a3, a5, a1, bmw 1 series coupe and nissan 350z.

Id also prefer a coupe car

You wont get an A5 or a 1 Coupe worth buying for under £10k. None of these cars seem like particularly clever first car ideas.

Pick something a tad more dull then when you've got a bit more experience you'll find the 1 Series Coupe or A5 has come into range price wise.

Up to 10k on a first car?

Nuts.

Spend buttons on something cheap to use for 6 - 12 months and bash the crap out of. You might not damage it at all but the chances are you might.

Also, why buy something limiting as a new driver for 10 grand that you will likely get bored of fast and want something faster/better in a few years that some NCB and experience will allow for?

If I may ask, why 10k on a first car? If money isn't an issue (and I mean you buying the car out right, no finance, no loan etc) then cool, but to me it sounds like one hell of a budget for a first car.

Have you looked at insurance first and formost? This might be a deciding factor.

What's your insurance budget etc and what is your expected annual mileage, are you fussed about fuel economy, and what do you expect to pay annually for servicing?

The car will be technically my dads, so the insurance cost will depend on him (we're living in Poland atm not sure if you can do that in uk) so I don't think insurance will cost that much, my cousin has a bmw 1 series hatchback which is worth around 10k and afaik he doesnt pay much.

The 10k is more of a personal reason the money is mine though so not daddys money :P

I can't say what do I expect to pay annually for servicing as I don't have experience of taking care of a car and no im not fussed about fuel economy

You can't insure it in your Dads name, its your car not his.

How old are you?

This has disaster written all over it. Buy a cheap Fiesta or something for 1500 quid. Tool around in it for a year or two then splash out on a nice A5 rather than a shonky pile of bottom of the market junk which is what you get with a 4 figure budget for a car like that.

18, all I am aware of is that my Cousin and a friend one has a skoda octavia and other bmw 1 series have their cars be technically their Parents cars and they pay their insurance, afaik you cant do that in the uk but you can in Poland

You can do it in the UK but it's not legal.

Maybe insurance in Poland works much differently and the insurance is directly linked to the car owner rather than the primary driver but I would not know! I would suggest you actually find out for sure rather than rely on such information from pals, many people in the UK would advise their mates to do the same as them (front on insurance) but does not mean it is legal.

18 years old. Buying first car.

No 350Z. No crappy bottom of the market Audi.

Get a tidy Focus 1.6 or a Fiesta or something - the insurance on anything else will make you cry. I'd be amazed if anyone will touch you on most of these cars for less than £5k anyway.

Alright, but anyway could you still suggest a car not for 10k then but I don't want a ford fiesta for a car, exclude the fact that its a first car then in terms of experience etc... I still want a car I wont be embaressed driving, I also don't want to be buying a new car in 1 year I would like to stick with the car and mod it a bit.

would a audi a3 be so crazy though?

exclude the fact that its a first car then in terms of experience etc...

Why? It's a material fact. Pointless excluding this as it dictates the sort of car you should buy.

I still want a car I wont be embaressed driving

You have issues if you'd be 'embaressed' with a Ford Focus as a first car. You have to walk before you can run. Plenty of time in the future for ruining an Audi with crappy mods, once you can insure it.

If I had my 350Z when I was 18 I would have wrapped it around a tree. I'm 22 now with 5 years driving and even now sometimes it catches me out.

Why not a Fiesta ST or something looks good with fairly decent power. Pretty good for a first car IMO

I don't really get it. Will the car be predominantly driven in London or Poland?

If Poland, then I don't know what the rules are there regarding insurance.

If London, then what you're suggesting is fronting, and is illegal. Get something cheap and simple for a first car or you're on a one-way street to a many-thousand pound insurance bill.

When you apply for insurance does it matter how many years you have been driving a car or how long have you held your licence or both? Basically what im asking is can I apply for insurance having held a licence for e.g. 5 years but never having owned a car in those 5 years yet still obtain insurance at a price of a person who has been driving a car for 5 years?
