gtx 680 or gtx 690

thanks for input guys

a lot of talk on sli ive been down that route didnt like the excessive noise or heat ,just want to upgrade my gpu for the best 1 for my needs i primarily game fps.
dont intend to buy extra moniters happy with 1 moniter so just wondering which card is best suited for my needs.
thanks

What's the difference between the two? There's not much price difference and if anything the FTW is more expensive than the Classified? (The latter supposedly the best single 680 out right now?)

Why the 680 your wasting 100 quid. I would also bet you won't need 4GB of zvram either.

For the first part maybe. But personally I can say definitely no to the second one. Games right now are beginning to breach 2gb, what about next year or the year after that? Not all of us can upgrade every cycle.

Also, modding. In particular, Skyrim. It WILL breach 2GB. Possibly even 3.

That's just my experience though. 1440p plus modding.

Only if you play at high res youll breach 2gb. I can't afford to upgrade each cycle either. But theres no point paying that much for 4gb when next year they might decide to actually make 4gb mainstream and 6gb premium...?

Yeah, base by base case. Skyrim is close on a modded 1080p, for my 1440p purposes? The 4gb is a must.

Here's how I see it, based on what I've read over the past couple of days:

If you like to upgrade each cycle or when you can, get the 670 and save yourself money since it's a good card.

If you don't upgrade every cycle, and only upgrade when you feel you need to, go balls out and grab a 680 GTX 4GB (or 2GB, depending on your resolution and gaming use). Stay happy with that one for now, as it will destroy pretty much everything out right now.

Then, in time when it starts to fall behind? Grab another one and SLI it. By that time prices will have most likely plummeted, and two 680s in SLI is a formidable force and will keep you going for a while, a long while.

That's just how I would see it going though.

See. Im doing that but with 670s. Waiting for a windforce 670 4GB. Hoping itll be next year. Then Ill try to get one. And sli down the line. The 680 just aint worth the cash when theres 4Gb 670s kicking about.

Perhaps, but to me that little bit of performance you get over the 670, then SLI it later down the line leads to a nice jump in performance that should be nicely futureproofed.

Guess it's all relative though, since buying the top of the line 680s is more likely to get you some nice OCs.

I'd probably go with the 670 if there was a 4GB FTW... Too bad there won't be until mid this month and I dunno if I can wait that long since I have a second 1440p monitor that isn't working as my 6950 doesn't do dual link. Don't like the 670 SC because it's got the tiny 670 PCB.

And since I plan to SLI, I don't like the cards with the non reference coolers, could be problematic down the line.

True. But I believe the top of the line 670s are just 3% behind the 680s when overclocked. So if you really wanted 3% more power for 100 quid extra go for it :p

Not really... but there's still no ref cards in the 670 series with 4GB memory that use the 680 pcb. I bet overclocking the tiny 670 pcb won't be nearly as impressive. :p

KFA2 670 SLI is an amazing graphics card setup to have, it just destroys everything. I play skyrim with loads of mods and it doesnt even flinch, i get high fps and no slowdowns or arifacts. It really is a brilliant, ive never gone SLI before and it was so easy to do and setup. I was a little worried about going nvidia since the last one i had was a 280gtx but the drivers have been awesome.
If you game at a high res i seriously recommend 670 SLI, it just aint worth getting a single superduper 680.

Slightly more when both overclocked. But true the differences aren't huge. They are still the faster card though.

In your eyes it might not be worth the extra money but to the next guy the extra £100 or whatever is pocket money.

I bought my reference 680 on release day so was locked into getting another upon moving to SLI. But I don't feel like I've had my pants pulled down by the price. In fact the opposite. I'm very satisfied.
