Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Not being funny, but all you have to do is read a few posts in this forum thread to get that info.

 I'm looking for experiences not theories! and I'm still reading up whilst someone recommends something they have actually got working satisfactorily, and this thread alone is 184 pages long!

Wrong side of the bed today was it mate!

Hi guys,

What is the best least expensive router to pair with the SuperHub in modem mode please?

Lots of choice. I got a new DIR 615 at auction for a tenner. Was supplied by Virgin but never opened or used. Great wireless but not gigabit ethernet if that is important to you.

Thanks Tuvoc,

Sounds like a good price, and I'm only on the 30meg package so the gigabit ethernet isn't a concern :)

I've run this for several months, firstly with the old Ambit modem, and for a couple of months with the superhub. It has been totally reliable for me. I use wireless only, and the wireless network gets hammered. But it has never fallen over (yet)

Excellent, just the sort of info I was needing, I'm currently 'hunting' a few new ones at around £10 ;):D

Are they all the same, as I see some listed with slightly different model numbers?

I had to be patient (and a bit lucky) to get the new one for a tenner. The ones that are all black, and physically smaller, are the latest versions. I have one of those. The earlier ones are probably OK, I don't know what the differences are.

Yes, if I'm unhappy with Virgin it would be the pathetic upload speeds. I'm still waiting on mine to be doubled, but even then it will only be 6MB, 10:1. BT have much better upload ratios, I'll give them that. I guess 10:1 is OK for 90% of people though.

You would expect a higher upload in combination with the higher download speed. What do you get at the moment upload wise?

There is an internal rumour that the upload speed will be tripling. Not got any evidence yet though but as soon as I find out for definite you lot would be the first to know :)

Tripling from our 'before double' speeds i assume? I'd much prefer triple 6mb :P

60Mb down, 3Mb up.

Yeah, I pay for the same. The engineer who came down for some power error (That didn't affect is in any way) said that he's heard the upload upgrade is expected when the download upgrade has been finished - next year.

Getting my double speed upgrade (20Mb up to 60Mb) on the 17th and picked up a DIR615 D4 for £4 on some facebook local sellers site, already flashed it to DD-WRT and its been rock solid since the first reboot! result! just waiting for the upload speed to increase now as we are stuck at 1.9Mb :(

Flashing mine was a great decision, I flashed mine years ago and its now acting as a repeater bridge downstairs. They are a great starting point for getting into dd-wrt since they are so cheap on the bay since virgin sent so many of them out.

Seen a lot of these graphs on here so thought I'd give it a try. Wish I hadn't now, doesn't look so great. Connection is ok though really, generally good speeds (50mbps package). Anything I can be doing to improve this or is it purely down to the local area?
