Hi All,

It was recently my birthday and I got given some money, and have been deciding on what to spend it on, was thinking a watch would be a nice piece just for sentimental value, rather than spending it on clothes or the car

I really like Tag watches, however I just can't justify the price tag, I dont wear watches, and haven't done all my life, but i reckon I could get used to it without having to check my phone all the time.

I dont like metal straps, much prefer a brown leather one, a face that looks pretty sturdy, but I have small wrists so the oversized TW steel ones would look silly, however thats the style which I like.

What suggestions are there? budget of roughly £150?

Seiko

edit - there's loads of them... Seiko 5 should be within budget:

something like that perhaps - brown leather strap....

while its not 'haute horology' they do make their own movements at least and its a proper watch...

I did put £150, but reading a few other forums Im a member of Id need to at least double that and aim for quality like a Tissot?

Really like the style of TW steel - I don't want to buy a fashion watch either, I want it to look nice as I'll be spending birthday money on it - OK its not Breitling territory lol but any brands for 1/10th of the price? lol

The Tissot PRC200 is nice but has a metal strap. Also look into Christopher Ward watches for you budget. May need to up it a little though.

I rate Seikos as budget watches. How much roughly do you have to spend on a watch?

Budget watch? its well built, accurate and looks nice. it's not like its made of plastic. My Seiko is more accurate than someone at work's £2k Rolex, which btw he took back and got his money back because how inaccurate it is. It was losing 30 seconds every week !

surely the other poster was referring to the price... the quality/looks being rather irrelevant as far as 'budget' is concerned in this case

if my car is faster than a broken down Porsche does that tell you anything about my car? I'm not sure comparing to a broken Rolex is necessarily relevant though certainly Grand Seikos can compare with and even surpass a Rolex. For the OPs budget though... the Seiko he will be able to buy won't, that doesn't mean its not still a good watch and very very good value.

I have an image that Seiko is an old mans watch lol.

In the sub-Swiss class I'd say Seiko are the daddies. I can't count how many people I know that have got Seiko watches that they've had for years. Maybe that's why you think they're old mans watches? :p

At the moment I'm wearing a Seiko I bought in April 1992. It has never missed a beat. My TAG s/el is getting a new battery at the moment. It cost 10 times as much and has been a tenth as reliable.

You have totally missed my point. I *rate* them as budget watches. They are cheap to buy but very well made and use in-house movements.

FWIW, my Seiko is a little more accurate than my Omega too. If your colleague's Rolex was losing 30 seconds a week then it needed servicing. Fundamentally, both watches should tangibly be as accurate as each other.

Considering you can go out and spend 5 figures on a watch a ~£100 Seiko would be considered a budget watch. 30 seconds a week isn't much really considering it's a mechanical watch, 99.995% accuracy isn't like it's losing minutes every day especially if it's due a service.

Are there any Rolexes that can be bought for £2k now?

Anyway, surely all Rolexes are COSC certified which means they should be more accurate than 30 seconds/week.

TW steel make some nice watches indeed but I would recommend trying them in a shop if you can. It can be surprising how big they are!

Probably bought a second hand one that hasn't had a service then complained because it wasn't as accurate as a quartz or something.

TW Steel specialise in oversized watches but if you like the style you might be able to find something similar in a normal size.
