Haha yeah, that video seriously helped me out, I had no idea about anything before I watched it :p

This game is certainly worth the £10 I spent, can't wait for future updates! Also can't wait for when i'm good enough to land on the Mun!
 
The Mun is going to be tricky!! But yeah, I'm looking forward too that one too!!

Sacked off my earlier high orbit job, used the same rocket and tried again, got a nice stable orbit of AP 307,XXX PE 302,XXX

Only issue I'm having, is that in the video, the guy is able to increase and decrease his boosters while in the 'M' screen.
I can't?! Which makes it tricky to fine tune.

Is this something that's changed in a later version or am I doing something wrong??

Edit: cancel that, just worked out how!

Power = Awesome fireworks. :)
Maybe, with a few more struts that design wont explode.

Nice design there, an in orbit.
However your craft only needs 1 ASAS unit (More is pointless)
But if you use SAS (Basic ASAS unit) you can use multiple to counteract an best control your craft.
So best put that single ASAS on the nose, an secure it with 3 struts.

My first build didn't have any SAS on the other rockets and it was a nightmare to get in orbit. Required loads of 'flying' from me and due to my poor control was only getting a few into space.
Chucking an SAS on pretty much everything and turning it on prior to launch makes it go up straight as a die with no 'flying' required.

All done with the same ship, and with previous practice runs I know I can get the little fella's back safely too :cool:
I don't think I'm anywhere near competent enough to head towards the Mun just yet, so think I'll try some different ship designs.

Ha, I'm such a tool. I was going to try chucking something at the Mun just to see if I could hit it, but you can't make anything unmanned and I felt guilty about sacrificing my dudes :(
 
Just beat my record for Moon landing. Landed my top 2 stages on the moon in 3 hours 33 minutes! :D
Made all the more awesome that the Kerbal's name is the same as mine :p

I'm finding that being pretty conservative is working well.
I can't do anything adventurous yet like head off to the Mun, not nearly enough power, but for getting up and coming back safely some solid boosters and two stages of liquid seems ample :)

Yeah most my designs could get me into orbit, just having trouble finding to power for anything else... Wondering how the heck some people can get to Minimus and back! :eek:

I'll be honest - I was lucky with the time because the moon was in the perfect spot. I just burned straight up at full throttle until my apoapsis was roughly the same distance away from Kerbin as the moon and practically crashed into it!
Was a solid minute or so burn to slow down to stop me nailing the moon at 1km/s!

Ideally you want a launcher stage that burns until you are at 50km, by this point you'll have enough speed to go into an orbit with tweaks, at this point you need a long burning stage to just carry you over to the Mun. It doesn't need a huge amount of power (although in Kerbal more = bigger grins) then you just need a tidy lander stage.

Not sure what other tips I can really give, I sort of got the hang of it and can just do it now! The main thing is getting familiar with all the different directions on the navball. Once you have that things are quite easy!
 
Landing on Kerbin is a lot more tricky than landing on the Mun, Minimus is even easier again. Less mavity makes things a lot smoother :)
You'll need a lot more thrust to do it easily on Kerbin.

Once you have a rocket with enough thrust to get out to the mun (in a straight line) it doesn't require much more to get into orbit of the moon and then move towards landing.

Burn straight up until you will reach the Mun's orbit at the top, turn 90 degrees (in line with 90 on the navball) and burn again, this will turn your orbit to a circle roughly matching the Mun.
Keep yours just inside the Mun orbit and speed up time until you catch up with its mavity. Once you've got the hang of that you can fine tune with knowing when to launch and a better flight path.
 
Even easier get in a low kerbin orbit at 90 degrees heading. Then when the mum rises above kerbin. Throttle up, untill just past Tge moons orbit and you're guaranteed to get pulled in.

Not really.
A rocket requires massive power to leave the ground, push throught the atmosphere. An eventually achieve stable orbit.
The difference in Delta V to reach Mun isnt expotentally greater than achieving orbit.
The same for Minimus, it only requires a little more.

Surely that will vary based on how much thrust you have in your rocket? (unless I'm not quite picturing it right)
