Launch Set of "Software" Titles Coming Sept 5

Aug 8, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.

The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.

More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.

"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."

Adobe? MS Office? More smaller things like the piriform software? If everything is priced right this could most certainly be a winner. Perhaps if Antivirus software was for sale they might optimise it better.

Mmm when I read about this it made me think of what it'll be like in the future... Sounds like you won't buy any sort of digital software (Applications and Games), in physical format and it'll be through App Stores such as Steam or MAS or whatever Microsoft are cooking up :p

But I've put my trust in Steam, and it hasn't done much wrong, so it'll be interesting to see what they have to offer :)

Good news kind off, I wonder what it is. I don't buy software though and haven't for ages. Can get everything for free. Be it OpenOffice, MS security, paint.net or whatever.

Or Steam Stream? :D

Live streaming direct through Steam would be awesome.

Xfire do it easily enough, I know they use 3rd party, but they don't have anywhere near the cash Valve has, and with all the capabilities that Valve have, they could probably do it all within their own company at a pretty minute cost.

The only thing that really worry's me about this is having all my games & apps attached to a single steam account...

If i ever got banned or hacked etc from steam for any reason i could end up loosing £1000's of pounds worth of software in one go..

Am sure there a saying of "You should never keep all your eggs in one basket" or something like that

To be fair, I don't think they'll subscribe or 'rent' software out as they can't be traded in, so even if your banned, you'll still be able to access them. Hacked on the other hand is a good point, Steams impossible to hack, anyway. I hope! :p

Live streaming direct through Steam would be awesome.

People would gladly pay a monthly/yearly fee for server costs for such a service I would imagine.

It is one of the features I really like from OnLive.

Is fun jumping onto a friends stream to mock them for how **** they are.
