Watches

I thought I did say that in the first place - basic quartz movement in a fancy case + brand name.... was just saying I didn't personally see the point.

Not really. You just said what you thought it was, I meant actually explain that they are really just cheap generic movements. Which, to be fair I didn't know and would explain why its been so much less reliable than my Seiko.

At the end of the day I made a post promoting the virtues of Seiko as it's what I'd recommend to the OP in his budget, you used my post to call quartz TAGs pointless. It's your opinion and when explained has weight, I just dont like my taste being called pointless. Despite it's unreliability I still really like it after 14years, I got a real bargain and would happily pay the same again.

I thought it was fairly clear that I was refering to the movement in particular  my original post on the subject

no offense but I really don't see the point in spending that much on what is a very basic quartz watch - essentially a swatch in a slightly nicer case and with a brand name that you've paid a huge markup for.

I'm sure the case is nice and of a decent quality + the brand is strong thanks to the amount of marketing Tag does

and since you've stated that you've bought it for the brand/looks then I don't see why you'd have a problem with that statement... you're happy to pay $$$ for a brand name, that's cool - just different tastes that's all :)

This is the movement fitted to my JLC, doesn't this make it all worthwhile? :p

bad news it's due a service, going to sting real bad :(

Wasn't there a question about what watch to buy somewhere in this thread? :)

For quartz I would be looking at Seiko, Citizen and Casio - I really like my Casio Edifice Waveceptor as it's radio adjusted so I can use it as a reference for correcting my hideously inaccurate ;) automatic watches.

Another left-field choice in the quartz area might be a Bulova Precisionist Claremont - it's quartz (with a Citizen movement I believe) but it has a sweeping second hand like an automatic (but even smoother):

As for automatic I think at your price level I would look at something like a Seiko SK007 or Monster - but they might be a bit oversized for what you want. If you want something really different with an automatic movement maybe try a Vostok Amphibia from Russia - you could get two for your budget and they are a lot less bulky than a Seiko Monster. Have a look here:

Indeed, so I'm still confused why you just decided to call quartz TAG watches pointless when all i was doing was extolling the virtues of Seiko...which I had suggested for the OP.

I was just saying I don't see the point... just sharing a view on them as you were too in being critical of your TAG compared with your Seiko. Don't get me wrong I don't completely hate Tag or anything - I'd be happy to own a vintage Heuer or one of the current Monacos.

To try and illustrate my personal feelings on it getting a watch with a basic quartz movement from a brand that's perceived to be prestigious - its sort of like buying this:

...because you wanted a car with a high end label and thought Aston Martin was a good brand... while it is technically an 'Aston Martin' (basically a Toyota underneath it all but for triple the price) the car itself doesn't necessarily embody what a car carrying that type of label should perhaps embody.

Really interesting video, thanks. Funny, they made us watch videos like that at school and we couldn't wait for them to finish, these days I'm quite happy to sit and watch them about things I'm not even very interested in :D
You should watch How Its Made on Quest channel, you'd love it :D

@dowie...You make a good point and you've certainly educated me as to why the TAG has been so unreliable.

What I'm saying is why this thread? I just think you were going O T and I took it a bit personally because you quoted me. I was recommending Seiko and mentioned TAG incidentally. I don't think the OP was ever considering a 1k plus watch.

It REALLY irks me when someone gets out their phone every 5 minutes to check the time. It's childish, anti-social and annoying. Wrist watches are instant, discrete, highly functional, and if you want them to be, stylish, and traditional.

Please tell me more about childish and anti-social behavior :/

Sorry, yeah it was a bit of an off topic comment.. I wasn't trying to be offensive or anything was just a comment/view

wow, it seems like there is a bit of a discussion going on in terms of going for a quartz or going for something with a mechanical movement, i merely suggested purchasing a watch from money I received for my birthday as i'll probably keep it forever unlike clothes and other items.

seems like my budget of £150 is too low to buy a watch with some sort of "show off value" and I need to be spending in the region of £800-£1000 for a brand such as ORIS which seems not to be mentioned in this thread, its all about Omega or Rolex...however Breitling? of course i'd like something like that but like some posters on here I cant justify the price tag, especially because I'm not a watch savvy person.

I guess I just want a watch, to look good, feel nice, have sort of prestige and perceived value. When looking at Seiko/Citizen I just picture Argos lol.

Are the likes of TW steel have a sign of quality? I have seen Christopher ward, however Im not keen on buying watches online.

its all about Omega or Rolex....

What about a Hamilton, they have heritage, reliable swiss movements and some great designs. They do some decent pieces for under £500 such as the khaki field range.
For under 1k i would look at Stowa from Germany. Very well regarded and good prices due to the weak euro.
