Steam Expanding

I believe they have one in the works, which is why they've been giving Linux so much attention. I reckon they're making a Steam OS based on Linux.

Potentially good news I suppose. They could get the mass market playing games on a completely different format, ending the microsoft monopoly on pc gamers.

Anything that kills off Games for Windows live gets a thumbs up from me.

I like the idea of SteamStream you guys have mentioned.. it would go down very well. So would an entire media sharing network for Let's Plays/Walkthrough type videos etc, particularly if accessible in steam overlay and so forth. Lots of possibility :D

so its gonna be like the mac app store then ?

I think they're more aiming it as a competitor to the Windows 8 one given all the fuss they've been making about it.

Nice concept, but I can't imagine a program that I'd have to get on Steam. Unless it's competitive, I can't see the benefits unlike with games.

loving this idea in principle. the only thing i dont like, is the fact that with the new steam rules you dont effectively own the software, youd be leasing it through steam.

Given Stardock already sell games on steam, it would be good if their desktop tools like fences pro were available. Especially if they made it into a steam sale ;)

While I applaud their expansion I hope that it doesn't detract from their currently good service, or overstretch their resources.

Thats pretty much the same with all software (yes, not all, but most commercial software at least), through Steam or not. You don't buy the software, you just buy permission to use it.

It will be interesting to see how they apply the Steam DRM to this. I wouldn't like it if you have to log into Steam to run your apps, especially with things that you want to load during startup. Just one more hoop to jump through.
