Ok so my HD4890 will be fairly useless in Windows 8 tried installing the 12.6 drivers and RP drivers but no such look it installs with no errors driver stays the same and the control panel only lets me see Power, Presets and Pinned.

Heading over the the ATI site to see if BETA drivers were being developed i come across this gem.

"Note: The In-the-box AMD graphics driver that is included with Windows® 8 will include support for the AMD Radeon HD 4000, 3000, and 2000 series, and it will support the WDDM 1.1 driver level features. The AMD Catalyst driver for Windows 8 will only include support for WDDM 1.2 support products (AMD Radeon HD 5000 and later), and will not support the AMD Radeon HD 4000, HD 3000, and HD 2000 series."

I had to look 2x because i could not believe that a 3 year old product that they were still selling today in notebooks, desktops and offering upgrade coupons for windows 8 would now be a classed as a legacy product.

So needless to say i am not a happy bunny about ATI/AMD and I am going to be finding a new Desktop graphics card.

Could anyone recommend me a NONE ATI card my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD3P looking for something better than my current HD4890 card and as cheap as possible.

Thanks :D

How much are you willing to spend and what games do you play?

Additionally what is the resolution you game at and the rest of your machine?

I only really play warcraft and my monitor supports 1680 x 1050 only. I normally run a projector also (extended mode) and on the projector i run XBMC so the miss can watch a movie on projector the same time i am playing WoW. The projector is at 1280 x 768 or 1280 x 720 (again this is always in extended mode as the second monitor if you wish and the first monitor is always at 1680 x 1050 and playing WoW. I dont play any other games. Something under £100 would be good looking for as cheap as possible but still being able to do the above but in ultra mode on wow like i can currently on my 4890. My only over requirement would be windows 8 compatible (so a fairly new card).

I would get a 6850 then if I were you but you don't want to go AMD.

If you want to go down the second hand route you can probably pick up a 560/560Ti and that will be more than enough at your resolution.

Cheaper and you're looking at second hand 460/470...

The butthurt is strong in this one, you're over reacting just a tiny bit.

It's talking about that specific beta driver. The idea is that people who are using windows 8 are more likely to be using a recent GPU, so the emphasis will be placed on them during testing phases.

I don't think it does, it's talking about the "in the box" driver for windows 8 - meaning the default driver built in to windows 8 - and future catalyst drivers for windows, the beta itself (to which this Note: is attached) does not include a windows 8 version

also see here;

it seems to suggest that they will release a launch driver for windows 8 and that's it, unless I'm reading it wrong, there will still be quarterly updates for 4000 on windows 7 and below

the launch driver is the one that is in place right now when you install windows 8. they will focus on WDDM 1.2 now not 1.1 so anything 1.1 has had its final update i think. note the part ". The AMD Catalyst driver for Windows 8 will only include support for WDDM 1.2 support products" anything below 5XXX is 1.1 anything above is 1.2 and will get support / updates. Although old cards will be supported it will only likely be by the basic driver unless something is horribly wrong with it.

tbh .. id expect suport for soemthign for 5 years ( which woudl cover sales of goods ) , in computer terms you cant ecpect to hang to somethign with updates for life :(

A better question would be... why the hell do you want Windows 8? :p By all accounts win8 will suck more than a 100 foot tall Dyson.

Windows 8 is a tic os and nothing more, avoid and wait for the toc.

If windows 8 is optimised for the android/touch screen market surely they'll realise that computer wise its a flop and release a separate computer friendly version not too long after. But them again there's far,too many deluded people whol buy it even if it's terrible - look at Windows ME

amd 5000 series is 3 years old a dinosaur in this field still support 11.1
the 4800 series will work in windows 8 just not with 1.2 VDDM.
due to its DX11.1.....WDDM 1.2
some say windows 8 will suck, using VDDM 1.2 I dont think so.
multiuse with tablets and PC are coming either we want it or not.
social users make sure of that.

so AMD and Nvidia cant do what the hardware wont support...

how can windows 8 be optimised for android?
that's like saying "if windows 8 is optimised for Linux"

anyway - this happens every time MS release a new OS, nobody really wants to change but it will get foisted upon the vast majority of people because it will become the default OS that all the big players put on their machines
I'm sure the only reason most people moved to windows 7 out of choice was because of DX10/11
if they do a similar thing with DX12 then I'm sure most of us will begrudgingly upgrade then

Why not just use the default Windows drivers? They're from AMD anyway, and these cards pretty much can't be optimised any further.
