GeForce 8400GS HDMI choppy - cant play HD! Is this card even capable of HD?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me choose a graphic card to upgrade my old Dell Dimension 5150.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/om/WD846A02.pdf

It has an Intel Pentium D 2.80Ghz, 4GB Ram, XP Pro SP3 and I have a nice Myleene Klass mousemat.

It came many years ago with an ATI 128MB X300 which I have removed and I've just put in a Gigabyte GeForce 8400GS 512 MB ATX HDMI Graphics Card (GV-N84S-512I) with it's 'turbocache' but HD video is still slightly choppy. Installation of the Nvidia software didn't go well with a 'software failed to install' message at the end but I restarted and I do have the little control panel for the card now.

Since it's got HDMI outputs and the box goes on about playing High Def video I thought this would work but after reading a lot on here many people say this card is crap and some suggest there could be a bottleneck and that my mobo isn't able to carry all the data quickly enough (something like that!?!)

It's driving me mad as I got a Samsung S3 phone and all my videos are unplayable on the machine (plays about 2 seconds then jerks to 10 seconds then 20 seconds) and just wondered if its worth playing about with the drivers more or if there is a better card that I could use that somehow wont have a bottle neck? Maybe I just need to stop flogging this old machines and get something newer?

Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated.

The settings I have in my post can play HD files just fine on most settings, the weakest system I tested it was on an Atom netbook, which just about coped with 720p.
