Best LGA 2011 air heat sink?

I have just got a 3930k and I now need to get a air cooler heat sink, I would like to get water cooling but I move my system around too much. In 2008 when I got a heat sink for my Q6600, the HDT-S1283, at the time it was in my opinion the best heat sink around. Anyway, when I started looking for a heat sink this time around I presumed that the HDT-S1283 or it's successor would still be the best.

However, I have found out that a lot has changed in the past 4 years and the good old HDT-S1283 doesn't really compare to newer heat sinks. So, my question is what is the best heat sink, I would preferably like one that doesn't make too much noise, so less then like 50db and one that is cost effective.

Thanks in advance.

I'm starting to think that a heavy heatsink is not a good idea as I move my system around a lot, would a closed water system be better?

And, does the guarantee on a water cooling system cover damage to components?

Phanteks PH-TC14PE Gets my vote. Use it on a 3930K @4.5-4.6GHz.

The only issue with it is, fitting it can be a pain.

I use to move my PC a fair bit when at uni and had no issues with a Noctua NH-D14. You just have to make sure you have your PC lying flat if you are transporting it by car. Otherwise, simply remove the cooler prior. Thankfully with LGA 2011, mounting and removing coolers is even easier. A closed water system would be easier but unless you have to move your system around every week, I'd just get an air cooler.

I'm not even sure that something with liquid sloshing about inside is all that great of an idea if you move your PC a lot anyway - with all the reports of leaks etc. on stationary systems it might not take much for a frequently moved system to spring one

the whole mounting system on the 2011 is pretty sturdy, I think you'd really have to go some to cause any damage - as mentioned above just make sure you put it on it's side if you transport it by vehicle

I've got the Silver Arrow (non-SB-E) with a 2011 fitting kit and it works fine @ 4.5ghz on a 3930k, I'm sure the SB-E version will be even better

From the research I have done the guarantee on some cooling systems do cover damage to components and I think that something like the H100 would be less risky.

Does the H100 fit in an Antec 900 (1st version) with little or no alteration, and I got the 3930k today and it came with no stock heatsink?

The 3930K doesn't come with a heatsink. I don't think the Antec case will support the H100. And lastly, even if your components are covered, do you really want the risk of them getting damaged in the first place? Admittedly leaks aren't common with the main issues being the pump failing, and noise whether it be the fans or from the pump.

How often will you be moving around? If you are moving your PC every week or so, then yes the ALC units will be useful. If it's once a month or less often, get an air cooler. Something like a Thermalright Venomous X would be lighter than the dual tower coolers mentioned above and still be highly effective.

Last year I moved it 8 times in a car and went to 4 LAN parties where I carried it across campus to get there and got a lift back, so a total of 16 last year.

I've looked into the H100 and it is 120mm wide, the Antec 900 front bays are 126.1mm wide. So I could just get some wood or something, cut it to the right size, drill some holes in the right places and it should in theory fit.

isn't it time someone done a thread for 'best air coolers' and make it a sticky?
not hinting at you Helios ;)

Also moved my pc around, moved house 3 times this year and move the pc sometimes never had a problem, my D14 sits on my board like a rock, it's been clamped onto my board for over 2 years and temps still never really go over 60c on an overclocked Q6600 1.4v without the best case airflow. I've never been worried about it its not that heavy considering the board is made of such strong materials.

I recommend the D14, or any of it's followers listed in the first post. The Phanteks PH-TC14PE is black and white...I want this for my Fractal Arc build. :P

Oh, also if you have D14 on low RPM it's practically inaudible thanks to the great noctua fans, and on high it's fine. I have mine on High all the time and don't really notice it (1300RPM). Can't hear it over my case airflow.

It's come down to either the Nctua-D14 or the H100 with Noctua fans. Starting to think that if I got the Noctua fans I could make my system around 20db.

H100 with Noctua fans is pretty pricy isn't it?

And still taking a gamble that H100 will work properly. Corsair forum still has people having problems with brand new coolers :(
