Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Ok thanks. So ill just email the above address and request to swap the superhub for the vmng300?

I am not sure how people have done it, as I have never done it myself. But I would pretty much say you are unhappy with the superhub for whatever reason and you want to change over to the vmng300.

Wont happen. Superhub has modem mode and that is all that you can use.

If you don't like the lights then put it in a cupboard or put tape over them. If you don't like the heat then unlucky as the VMNG300 will be the same

EDIT: People have exchanged superhubs for VMNG300 modems in the past but VM have introduced modem mode since

Might as well give BT a call then mate since your old modem will have been recycled

The EDIMAX i have downstairs wipes the floor with the SuperHub. I dont want to use the superhub in modem mode as the thing is massive and produces enough heat and light that i dont need the heating or lights on in the room when the things on (a slight exaggeration i know). So would just like the compact modem back i had before, i seen a few Virgin modems on ebay but not sure if they have the capacity for my 60meg download package?

Making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill there. I put electrical tape over the lights on mine, same as some other devices as they all have bright leds.

Is the Superhub worth getting yet? Or should I stick to my Modem and DIR-615?

Currently on 100Mbps but according to My Virgin Media, should be at 120Mbps?

My Superhub has been in modem mode for quite a while now and I've have no issue with it.

Surely if you're using a cable modem and a router, giving the superhub a go won't cause any issue? If it doesn't work out for you as a modem/router just switch it to modem only and go back to your previous setup?

I should have had a SuperHub delivered at home today to upgrade my old modem from 10MB to 30MB. Worried about all the stories I am hearing about the wireless performance. Hope it doesn't affect me too much as the hub will be installed in the middle of my house.

If you don't have a hub now then you have modem + your own router right? In which case continue using that router and have hub in modem only mode.

Problem solved.

I could however is the wireless so bad that it warrants leaving on my own router which is using up power? I was quite looking forward to ditching the old Netgear router.

I figured the only reason they were moving me onto the hub was my modem doesn't support anything more than 10MB?

This is the modem I have.

Old skool black one. I don't think it is up to the task. Mine wasn't which got upped to the blue one which then changed to hub.

A router doesn't use much power really, nothing to worry about.

It is only 12v or something but still, nothing is cheaper :p
I like the NetGear router too, it was supplied by virgin but I used some known hack to get into the box and upload a normal NetGear firmware over the supplied virgin one.

TBH 10MB was always fine for me, but recently 720p videos on YouTube don't really stream any more. Plus the main reason for the move was that fact I am paying the same price for 30MB despite getting only 10MB. Hopefully come next year my 30MB will turn into 60MB.

I'll see how much I get affected by the wireless first and then look to use the legacy NetGear if required. Do the super hubs have a feature to convert them into a straight modem rather than a router?

My download has started being terrible again :p (for a 100mb line that is)

Ran a few speed tests and all around 30-50ish on the download.

Plugged directly into the router, safe mode, disabled AV, etc. I've been getting around 700 pre rs errors on each channel. I've heard this might just be a glitch with the R36 firmware though?

Any chance you could advise awinchurch? :)

I'm getting horrible red lag spikes in games, It seems a lot of people on virgin have the same problem.

Pre RS errors could just be a bug yes but might not be. Also it should not have any effect unless you are getting post RS errors.

I can have a word tomorrow too see if there are any issues. It could be many things causing it but I highly highly highly doubt its utilisation

Ah ok cheers if you wouldn't mind mate. I spoke to someone earlier from Virgin who remoted on and was getting the same sort of speeds, 30-50mb, but told me it was probably due to the Olympics and their bandwidth allocation for it :p

He said to monitor it over the next couple of days and see if it gets better.
