Online poker

Was speaking to a friend and he was showing me how he makes a few hundred if not more a week on average, whilst being a student playing online poker, was just wondering is it really that profitable if you understand the game?

If your a really good online player yes you can make a few 100 a week but on a per hour basis you will be lucky to be earning over minimum wage

Note this was my experience playing as a student about 8 years ago during the boom years it's even harder now I still have the occasional dabble but without the yanks playing the fish pool has dried up considerably

Really though? I thought it would depend on how much your willing to risk, e.g on a tourny buy in, 50$, your more likely to earn way over the minimum wage if you win

If you work hard enough at it you can make a lot of money without taking a lot of risk. It's all about bankroll management.

Yes in theory you could risk more to win more but it's not that simple as the higher stakes are even more competitive I would easily make money on the low stakes cash games up to around .50/$1 blinds but any higher and I would get crushed by better players and the variance. So would open more tables to increase my per hour winnings but anymore than about 4 tables was too hard to manage

I found tournements a lot harder to play due to the fast rising blinds they are more luck based and you can go a long time without finishing in the money

slippery slope though. Go into it without much experience or money and you start losing it's easy to start chucking money at it to earn back what you've lost.

3 years later with a loss of house and massive debt some people thought it wasn't such a good idea.

If you are good and patient, then yes you can do alright.

Reason i say patient, is that a few years ago after a monster 9 hours playing and about 4am in the morning I stupidly called allin when I was 3rd place chip leader out of 11 people.

I had AA and the flop was AKJ. It turns out I was up against KK and JJ. There was a K on the river and I lost all my chips to the chip leader.

Sadest thing was due to the length of time playing and my tiredness, I hadn;t realised we were down to 11 players. The top 10 players all got a $20,000 ticket plus accomdation and spending money to the WSOP in Las Vegas :(

Looking back I probably just could have kept folding and somebody would have been out before me.

Most I ever one in a game was $2500. Equally I could go nights without being up at all.

Overall I was always up but factor in I was playing 20 to 30 hours a week, minimum wage didn;t even come close! I was always hoping for that big win thoough and came close a few times.

Anyone see the secret millionaire episode, the lad on it was around 20 years old and had around £6 million to his name all from online poker.

To update the thread, deposited £25 playing 25/50 tables. Well, fast forward 7 days and 2-3 more depsosits of £50, I'm now awaiting a withdrawal of about 1400$.

Remember playing with some of the oldskool q3 greats, they were making shed loads of money constantly. One of which was had a bankroll of over 100k and sat on the tables with the pros.
So yes, money can be made :)

You apparently made $1400 from online poker yet asked 7 days ago if you can even make considerable amounts of money via playing online? You definitely strike me as a clued up type of person.

This is the guy that ripped me for getting BBC in my A-Levels, yet he scraped DCE or something awful?

:D

A friend of mine at uni played a few times per week during the evenings, think he did 3/4 hours sessions. He usually made about £150-200 a week from it, but was both Unversity and southern University champion!

Yeah because I was ust to local gathering live poker. This was my first time playing online poker and after a good grind of 3-4hours a day I had a good day yesterday, what's your problem?

My mate has made quite a bit here and there. Could go from €100 win up to €10000 was his biggest win.

As the guy said above though since the yanks are not allowed play online poker anymore it's a lot harder to win.
