My mate’s alpha 156, one of the 1.6 jobbies had a noise just like this and it turned out to be a fault code on a sensor, I think it was crank position but could have been lambda. He got the code cleared and the noise went away.

I would have sworn when he bought it over that it was bottom end issues but apparently I was very wrong, sounded like an old agricultural diesel to me.

If it is the thrust bearing the noise will go away if you depress the clutch.

I think that's an Americanisation because the guy is looking at main bearings in that video

Excellent, have they given you a decent courtesy car to drive around rather than another washing machine on wheels?

Sounds like quite a job to diagnose and rectify so you might not be lost to us yet
