Anonymous Claims PSN Breach Affecting 10 Million Accounts

Anonymous claims it broke into the PlayStation Network and has a 50 gigabyte database of email accounts and their passwords. Ten million accounts "are at risk," says the hacker involved. The passwords appear to be encrypted, and many of the accounts appear to be from Europe. This still would be a great time to double-check your password security.

Kotaku has contacted Sony for comment and will update as the situation progresses.

Edit: [Update] The list in question appears to be a copy of this pastebin posting from March 19.

[Update] Shane Bettenhausen, with business development at Sony Computer Entertainment America, says the claim is "totally fake."

Hopefully this isn't true again, and hopefully Sony will release more information to clear this up. As it'll be a pain if it's happened again.

And Sony will lose more money, as they'll probably give out more free stuff for affected users.

But fingers crossed that it hasn't happened.

I looked through part of the list they posted and it looks to be mostly american email addresses, not sure if it's completely Stateside though.

I'm an expert cat burglar, I shall from this day forward rob all households, just to make sure their security is up to scratch :)

Doing my part for humanity :)

I shall of course leave each house a note saying their security wasnt up to standard.

Kotaku article updated saying it's a hoax, list is copy and pasted from another pastebin from a March.

Oh right, so they're doing me a favour then? That's great. :)

In a way they are, although I'm sure the only real reason they did it wad 'for the lulz'. Corporations have a duty to protect the customers data, its far more dangerous than most people realise. If this makes other corporations improve thier security, then it will be for 'the greater good'. I realise that's cold comfort to those of you impacted by this though.

From twitter about 28m ago.

@PlayStation
We can confirm that the recent claim that PSN was illegally hacked & that customer PWs and email addresses were accessed is completely false
