Hey all thinking of doing a journey from london to york soon.

Ive done london to leicester before and remember loads of speed cameras and or average speed checkers along the way

Google says it will take around 3 hours 40 minutes for 213 miles

But once past leicester is the m1 rigged with lots of cameras?
3 hours 40 minutes tells me there must be loads of cameras!

As far as I'm aware, the only cameras on the M1 are for the road work sections where they have average speed cameras.

I think last time I was on it, there were two Average Speed Camera sections currently as part of the widening scheme. You can see those on sites like the AA and Department for Transport.

Isn't 3 hours 40 minutes calculated using the speed limit for the roads you'll be using taking account of known traffic blackspots?

Something like that.

It has nothing to do with there being speed cameras or not.

It isn't assumed you'd be doing 70mph on a motorway with speed cameras and 100mph on one without.

I have an idea.

Don't break the speed limit :p

Also, i don't think google assumes you will be breaking the limit on a road with no cameras? lol.

Yer thanks but like ive done 120 miles to bham in around 1 hour 20 30 mins

I just dont get how an extra 80 miles will, take me 2 hours more

There aren't any speed Camera's from Leicester till you hit Nottingham at junc 25, where the motorway splits into four lanes, you have some overhead camera's, but I haven't seen them activated as yet.

...because you were clearly breaking the speed limit on the first run, whereas, as has been stated, Google assumes you are not. Not sure where the confusion is to be honest!

J25 -28 have variable speed limit cameras meaning you will be flashed if you exceed the speed limit should it be reduced (when the over-road signs light up an alternative speed limit due to congestion or accidents). They are not enforced when the NSL is in place AFAIK

Is this always the case though because on the M25 i always see people zooming through the variable limit signs (40,50 e.t.c) at much faster than the speed signalled.

I slow down to go though them at the right speed but it seems like no one else does and they know something i dont. :p

And to actually answer your question, yes the M1 has recently become rather laced with speed cameras, in various states of activeness. My experience has been that most of the (apparently) active fixed speed cameras are operational on the widened stretch between London and Luton. Then there's the average speed check zone, limited to 50mph, which has been moving southwards down the M1 for the best part of the last 3 years.

Yeah I've noticed this. However one time on the M6 at around midnight the signs had kicked in to reduce the speed limit down to 40mph and I went through at 50 and got a nice double flash.

Never heard anything about it so I got lucky, but it's at least taught me to always go through those areas at the indicated limit.

And yes as has already been mentioned there are now lots around the Luton area since the active traffic management upgrades are finally complete for a section. Some people moan about this but it's been a 50mph average limit for so many years now that actually being able to do 70 through it now almost made me feel I was doing something wrong. It'll be good when the other section is complete as 50mph average cam areas really annoy me, especially with how much time I spend going up and down the M1.

yeh it all seems a bit random. The other day i was going along at 60 and it changed to 40 right in front of my eyes. I couldnt really slam the brakes on as it would have caused more harm than good so i still went through it at 50+.

I presume they have an indicator to show how long they sign has been shown and not penalise anyone who has gone though it moments after it changes?
