Tuvoc - were you on a contract? If so how did you get out of O2?

Mine has been funny since the update, quite often the data simply doesn't work despite having full bars. I have to restart the phone for the data connection to work again.

Yes a contract, but I put the Three simcard back into the Xperia, which is what it had when I bought it, and the O2 simcard into my Nokia 710.

The Xperia works perfectly on Three, for example I get a battery life of up to a couple of days. But with the O2 simcard in there the battery is almost dead in 12 hrs and that is with the phone sitting there doing nothing ! The O2 signal is very weak in the house, and the Xperia consumes huge amounts of the battery trying to keep the signal.

Hi guys, I am new to Sony since my k700i, and wondered if their modern Android phones had a custom skin for Android, like HTC Sense or Touchwiz?

More specifically I was wondering if they do anything with social account links to contacts like HTC Sense does? (well it did in sense 2.0 anyway)

The Sony phones does have a custom skin.

It provides you with a way to link to Facebook in your contacts and more can be added, e.g. Whatsapp by downloading the apps.

I've had my Xperia S a few months now and I want to attempt to root it.

Any good guides? Do I have to go back to Gingerbread like this guide says ?http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742992
Can I root without wiping the entire phone/losing settings?

What does it mean to unlock the bootloader? Would I benefit from this as well as Rooting?

Figured i'd ask here to get answers from people just like me who have done it themselves. :)

Cheers

I used the guide that requires flashing back to GB - just following it very carefully. I wrote a few tips about it earlier in this thread. I think you lose your settings but you can back them up.

Unlocking the bootloader allows you to put custom ROMs on your phone, most ROMs require the bootloader to be unlocked but a couple can be flashed with it still locked. CM9 (Android 4.0) and CM10 (Android 4.1) should be the best ROMs offering increased performance and battery life but CM10 is still in early stages of development.

Beware - unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty.

Cheers for the advice. I don't think I need to unlock the bootloader. I just want to be able to use some apps that need rooting and customize Apex more (Wouldn't let me use widgets and this is what made me want to root).

You can still use widgets with Apex, its just you cant drag them out of the drawer without root. You can still add them by long pressing the home screen.

If you dont want to unlock the bootloader, then you will be only be able to use stock or MIUI roms. But the guide you have linked to is the way to do it.

Im pretty sure there are a few steps in there that will wipe your phone and settings. SD card should be fine though. But it is normally better to do wipes when changing roms to prevent bugs from creeping in.

Unfortunately my bootloader is locked. Ill probably hold out a bit longer before rooting. :)

On a side note about battery drain.

It seems leaving WIFI enabled, even when there is no network to connect to DOES prevent the phone from staying awake and not going into deepsleep like mine does with ICS. On my phone it stops Android System from being 1st or 2nd on the battery drain list.

Very strange. So fingers crossed that there are some bug fixes in the next firmware updates that have seem to been certified recently.

For me, there was some widgets that were in the app drawer that weren't in the Apex widget loader.

I did the process and it seemed fine, however now my internal storage shows up as empty on my PC yet its all on the phone. I had backed it up so erased my internal storage on the phone.. Then suddenly it shows up on windows with everything still there although the phone now shows it as empty. Something weird going on there. So going to try again..

I was hoping to use some of my favourite widgets on Apex but it appears I cannot. For example the tools widget that comes with the phone doesn't show in the list whereas most of the others like the battery power one does.. ??!

Cheers

Certain widgets may be exclusive to the Sony stock launcher program. So some widgets, such as the timescapes ect. are not usable or available when using other launchers.

Same here, it's a real pain in the arse. And when I do get it working again, it doesn't last long. I'm tempted to ask for a refund on the data I'm paying for!

Forgive my stupidity but how do you do speed dialing? 1 is automatically set up for voice mail but I can't figure out how to do it for contacts?

Very sad :( But i've managed to find good alternatives! Love my phone as if it was new again since rooting it and using a different launcher!

I just wish you could exclude folders from the album.. Mines full of icons and album art :(

Out of curiosity, which sony widgets were you wanting to use?

You could try an alternative album program. Have a look on the market.

Im annoyed that my bootloader is locked and there seems to be nothing to do about it. I guess I should be happy to be able to root at least. But not being able to try out CM 9 and 10 is a bit annoying ;)

are you on O2 too? It would be interesting to know if this is a problem for all xperia s with ICS or just O2 phones.

How am I meant to cheat at pub quizzes now?!

(I don't actually do pub quizzes).

Ya I'm on O2.

But a couple of nights ago I was with a mate who is also on O2 and he had a pretty good connection with his Motorola Razr.

I wondered if there was a way of using 3G only but could not find anything in the settings.
