Rebellion Developments (Rogue Warrior, Aliens vs Predator, Sniper Elite) is suing Stardock Entertainment and Ironclad Games in an Eastern Michigan district court for trademark violation over the use of the word "rebellion" in the title of Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.

Rebellion is asking for damages for being "deprived of substantial sales of its products" and for "the value of its trademarks as commercial assets." GameSpot notes: "Rebellion provided several examples where it claimed consumers would have been easily misled, including promotional materials which displayed the word 'Rebellion' much larger than the preceding 'Sins of a Solar Empire' and some that referred to the game only by the disputed trademark." .
:rolleyes::eek::rolleyes::rolleyes:

You cannot trademark words that people use as, you know, actual words.... Even Apple aren't that stupid, this is way beyond trying to trademark shapes that have existed since shapes became a thing.... Its that retarded.

I'd just write back to them saying, "Good luck with that."

GO SUE THEM ALL!

It's a shame, they make the awful Rogue Warrior, and then they insult us further by ruining what could have been an epic game with AvP.

Then Sniper Elite comes along and starts them on the path of redemption.

Then this happens.

:(

I was going to purchase Sniper Elite 2, they can fudge themselves now.

What a bunch of muppets, Rebellion do not have the kind of rep anyone would want to ride on the back of.

And market confusion, give me a break, we're talking about a bog standard word in the english language here, one that you'd actually expect to pop up relatively frequently in conflict based titles.

alleges that Stardock knowingly infringed on Rebellion's trademark on its name

Stardock marketing meeting:

**** Guys, this is a ******* awesome idea. We will use the name of that **** UK developer to sell a million copies of our game

Only the other day I purchased Sins of a solar Empire: Rebellion when I really wanted AVP. DAMN STARDOCK, DAMN THEM AND THEIR CLEVER MARKETING TO HELL.

"the value of its trademarks as commercial assets" - Yes, when I make a game, I will also chose to rip off a second rate developer.
