Eid Mubarak....!!!

What I found most surprising was that he said they didn't drink - is that common? I thought it was purely food. Must be a nightmare back in Pakistan with the heat there!

It is, i spent a summer of fasting back in Pakistan a long time ago and damn id not wish that on anyone...it was brutal in the heat. But your body gets used to it after awhile.

Thankfully here we havent had very hot days except for the past couple of days.

But yes no eating, drinking or smoking is allowed when your fasting.

And no sex, its more then just physical things though.

Throughout the month your supposed to abstain from sin and sinful thoughts.

For us its more difficult abroad but for the locals its nothing unusual. There bodys are used to it + their lifestyle accomadates for the climate.

Lol is that common? Google is your friend.

Well I have done. I've read that there's no food, fluid or sex during daytime. That doesn't mean it's fully or commonly adhered to - hence me asking actual Muslims...

Why do you assume its not "commonly adhered to"

I don't assume anything, again, it was why I asked.

Let me explain my thought process:

- I'm not a Muslim.
- I spoke to a Muslim about Ramadan a couple of weeks back, which got me thinking.
- A thread appears about Ramadan where I thought I could ask some simple questions, rather than read a Wiki entry.

I'm not sure why it's become something more than that. No assumptions, just questions. I'm just interested.

Thanks.

Its simple, you either adhere to it completely or you dont. The rules of fasting are pretty simple and clear really. If you dont adhere to the rules then its not a fast simples.

Ok, thank you. My only experiences of fasting would be for hospital treatment (no food, just clear fluids)!

No probs, just a bit puzzled as to why you thought not drinking water wasnt commonly adhered to.

I didn't know if it was or wasn't commonly adhered to really, but I was surprised that water was part of the fast. I know that if you're ill, menstruating etc that the fasting can be different so I didn't know if in Summer months water was allowed or excepted.

Non muslims are surprised by this actually, I think its because in Lent they're allowed water.

++ and the hospital fasting thing.

I did a unit on Islamic history at Uni in my 3rd year and it was very interesting. It didn't, however, cover Ramadan!

Lots of Muslims live in hot countries... could see why someone might make that assumption. There also seem to be lots of 'Muslims' with different interpretations of Islam and what is allowed... for example Moroccan girl I used to work with drinks alcohol except during Ramadan.

Syph was just asking a question, nowt wrong with that. In Saudi etal the no water thing is pretty hard!

I know of someone else that was observing Ramadan... apart from one day this week when it was their "day off". I would have LOLed, but TBH I wouldn't exactly have been much better!

That doesnt explain the assumtion, its clear no food or water. Anyhow can see from a non muslims perspective.

I doubt thats to do with interpretations  given the fact she doesnt drink during ramadan. Its something she doesnt adhere too, during 11 months of the year, theres no interpretation about it given the fact she acknowledges its a sin and doesnt do so during ramadam.

It is common. I'v done two whole months ramadans in Bangladesh and a full month in Saudi Arabia. Long and extreme hot days. Manage to do it. Very hard. Body gets use to it.

Here we're kinda lucky as it's not a hot country.

If it was clear to everyone then there wouldn't be assumptions... to non Muslims they might have heard about 'fasting' and assumed water was OK.

I remember doing it once to see what it was like, fortunately it was over the winter period so the days were short - however I found that challenging. Especially if I wanted to do some sports.

Doing it in the summer in this country where people are eating all around you and drinking must be a tough challenge (to me at any rate).

Much respect. :)

Eid Mubarak to our Muslim compatriots. :)
