Tyre Prices Make Me Cry

I think it's a major problem across the board with new cars. Even fiestas are being fitted with wide low profile 17" tyres. That require ~£100 a corner tyres...

But it's the fashion of the moment. Put two cars next to eachother, one with 14" wheels and balloon tyres, the other with 17" wheels and low-profile tyres and you can guarantee which car will get people wanting it.
The fact that it utterly ruins the ride quality too seems lost on a lot of people.
Even me, with my sensible head, would take the car on 20" rims over the one on 17s. It just looks better.

Take my Jag for example, it's got 18s on it at the moment but several people have commented to me that I should get some 20s on there.

These are generally going to be bought by your average mums with 2 small kids who has no idea of tyre quality and will go to the local tyre shop and get the cheapest tyre rubber made in china as she hears the price of the manufacture fitted tyre! Same applies to the young 17/18 year olds in this market, trying to afford decent rubber on their local supermarket part time wage.

I remember when I had my first car a 1.6 focus I think I paid £40-50 a corner fitted for Goodyears.

Its had a strange effect though really and not quite that simple.
The reason why I say so is the "upsizing" of alloys if you like has also made some small tyres expensive.
My 306 195/55/15 (relatively chunky sidewall) Are 110 quid for a decent tyre.
Where as if I was to decrease to sidewal to a 50 I can get the same brand for half the price.
Likewise if I upgrade to 16inch alloys tyres are still cheaper than 195/55/15's

Check with Audi for tyres as well. I've heard mixed things but some people have been able to get a better deal there for tyres fitted, than camskill etc and getting someone else to fit them. :)

Take my Jag for example, it's got 18s on it at the moment but several people have commented to me that I should get some 20s on there.

Old XJ was on 20" wheels, circa £250 per corner if I remember correctly.

It can be a wierd game especially if your standard tyre size aren't popular. When I had a Jeep there were only about 5 makes to choice from who made tyres in that size for the 16" rims. Upgrading to 17 or 18" rims gave me 20+ to choose from and made the tyres cheaper as more competition.

Don't understand why people cant just have a general convo on here like you would in the pub - Used to be like this but of late it has filled up with a mix of Trolls and "Little Men"

Motors has always had it's trolls and most posts get picked apart. This isn't anything new and you've only been here 8 months.

good post, too many people pick apart every aspect of a purchase.

As I said above, nothing new. As a mod you could do something about that :p

should have seen what happened when I took my car to Charlie Browns. 13" tyres one make in stock (Dunlop Sport) one make out of stock (Pirelli). Paid £80 a tyre. :p

You've only been a member since December, it really hasn't changed in the past 8-9 months..........

Did I research the cost of tyres? - no I didn't
Did I research the MPG/Reliability/Test Drive/tax disc/depreciation etc? - Yes I did.
Did I haggle hard and try and get myself a good deal? - Yes I did.

I don't want to be rude, and it's not a personal attack, but you were sufficiently concerned about the price of your annual VED bill to check it, yet ignored the tyres which make the cost of VED look pretty insignificant.

Only joined 8 months ago..but been a voyeur for much longer! :-)

Yes - I found out how insignificant it was when I looked into it - but no matter what car I bought from list I narrowed it down to - tyres were not going to be like my better half's £50/corner Mazda 2!

"When buying a Van Gogh one is not concerned about how much the hooks cost to hang it" - But one can share his feelings when he does look into it and the "I want a new car" feeling is replaced with "I'm a Tight A** 2 weeks away from pay day".

Not that I need tyres any time soon was just browsing on-line at work..

that is a stupid amount of tyre

265/35R20

265 wide tyres are supercar territory. its not like 3.0 of dagagagaga power needs 4x 265 tyres to keep the power in check

Plus putting things into perspective - My car before this (Mazda 6 Sport on 18") was £233/corner for decent make....£100-140 for budget.

Think the shock is that there is no middle ground/Budget with my new tyre size they are all between £299-£450/Tyre

Plus on past experiences Budget tyres when you do high'ish mileage/spirited driving are a false economy.

Number of Budget tyres I had in past that ended up warped - Which according to garage was due to Pot Holes/Cold weather and the high silicone content in the tyres.

For anyone who cares

It's an odd size 265/30/R20.
275/30/R20 has much more choice available. That was the size of the rears on my old BMW 750i and I think I paid around £240 each for P-Zeros.

It can be surprising if you have no knowledge of the tyre market.
The rear run flat tyres on my 1.6 1 Series are £300 each*. I can imagine a few people getting caught out.

*Please don't bash me - I have no problem with this

but of late it has filled up with a mix of Trolls and "Little Men"

As of late? This forum has been full of little men for a long long time now. You have to take the good with the bad if you want open, honest and frank discussion, otherwise it leads to a circle jerk off which you find on a lot of other forums.

There aren't many genuine Trolls, and those that are seem to be really good at it in terms of results. There are plenty of really bad posters who get called Trolls, but in reality they are just terrible people who made terrible life choices and post really badly, they don't intentionally try and wind people up, which is what a Troll does.
