Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Can someone spec me a router please. I don't want to buy one of the Asus ones because I don't want to spend that much money. It just has to be better than the SuperHub for wireless. I don't use all the features on a router like QoS. I just want a steady wireless connection. Getting the 60MB through the wireless.

Currently I'm about 3 metres from the superhub (not through any walls) and I get 80% signal which is absolutely awful.

search for this on the auction site,
Samsung CY-SWR1100. A top end router, rrp £120+ selling for a quarter of the price.

I have one - its been excellent on my 100Mb line.

Has Gigabit ports, QoS, N300, USB file sharing and looks very sleek.

Budget?

RTN-16 can be had for £60.

D-Link DIR-615 flashed with DD-WRT router will set you back around a tenner on eBay and the flash will take you all of 5 mins, a full wireless N router. Mine has 90+days of uptime and its still going strong, thats will 10+ wireless devices and streaming media to the PS3.

same as me then

im a new customer got Xl broadband 60mb anytime phone calls comes to £37.50 a month

getting 63mb downloads and 2.93mb uploads
Because of my brother working for Virgin mobile I get whatever service I want for £45 all inclusive, currently have a Tivo with all the sport channels, a HD+ box in the bedroom same package, 60Mb cable, with free phone calls :D

I have a DIR-615 here that I don't use because its rubbish. I found the wireless speeds to be absolutely garbage and the signal strength was only slightly better than the superhub.

I find the superhub much better in my circumstance but not sure if there is any way of making my dlink better :S

Have you flashed it with dd-WRT? what version of the 615 do you have?

Yeah flashed it ok. Can't remember the version and its in the cupboard somewhere now. Think it was version D or something like that rings a bell. Its the virgin media issue one anyway if that helps.

Im actually happy with my superhub but could never understand why my dlink was so crap when everyone else was raving about them

It's pretty hard to move it, as it's my mums house and you know what women are like, no cables! If it was me I'd run a wire to my laptop but it's not my house at the end of the day. I'll give some other channels a try. But earlier it was struggling to stream iPlayer in SD.

Thats strange, never had a problem and this one is my second!

Download Netstumbler, disconnect from your wireless and run it, It will search out all networks in range so you can see what channels are in use then choose one that's not used for your network and jobs a goodun, no more cross talk causing you connectivity problems.

Went for the supposed best channel and this is the result

the superhub is an absolute joke

Haha wow there you go it can't even load the forum URL on speedtest

second try...

I'm ****ed off, why should I have to fork out for a router when the one they provide is absolutely ****.

Awinchurch,

What could cause the jitter on my line? Considering it was never this bad before the 100mb!?

Not sure to be honest. Only thing I can think of is either when you upgraded your superhub landed on a different UBR than your old modem was sat on.

OR

Possibly the QoS inside the superhub prioritising other traffic over the think broadband monitor traffic which would give a worse reading but not sure if that is even plausible so possibly only the first

Why is it the best channel? Just because its the least congested doesn't make it the best

I said supposed and it's not just this channel, I've tried 3 others and the results are dire. I've reset the router 3 times and it's still embarassingly crap. The superhub hates my laptops inbuilt wireless adapter so I had to try an old Netgear one I had and that worked okay but now it's absolutey dog **** again. The amount of people that have problems with SuperHubs is ridiculous how can Virgin Media charge you that much money and then give you a product that is not fit for purpose. Do they not test these things out? I live in a pretty small 3 bed house and the range is absolutely dire.

Sometimes I wish I was back on my ****** ADSL, I got 40 ping and 3.5Mb/s down but at least it was consistent! Virgin cable is probably the most inconsistent product I have ever seen. And it's all let down by equipment, a lot of peoples problems are solved by going modem mode with a better router. Sure Virgin Media can't afford to give out top of the range routers for free but it's not even like it's our product, it's theirs. They should invest more money into their equipment because frankly it's disgusting.

Not really. You are on the Essential collection with 100mbps broadband increase. You get better prices with collections also he isn't getting the £10 broadband discount that everyone gets if they take out a telephone package.

First they said £46 a month and I said..GOODBYE..
So they gave me a Samsung V+ box HD and the rest for £37 also my 100Mb is not the free upgrade version.

And just for people that are on 100\10Mb VM will have the codes in their system by the end of the month.
So you can just call and they should give you the 120Mb freebie there and then :)

Get wifi analyzer for your mobile and see during the day and night what channels other people in your
area are on...then chose the ones they are not...I agree the SH is poop and so was version 2 of it.

Already have it, already doing that.

Ok, idiot question!

Can the old modem cope with 100meg?
If so can I swap it back? If I do would I be back on the origional UBR as before.

Yeah I know. Idiot question!!
