Is a GTX 690 overkill?

By the time you require the performance a 690 offers, there'll be faster cards out at half the price. "Future proofing" is never a good idea to go for when it comes to graphics cards. It makes the most sense to buy for now, you'll get better use out of your money.

yes the 690 is too much for future proofing, especially when you dont need to future proof, because i cant think of any hi tech games due out in the next 2 years....and even if there is something, i bet the 7970 can still handle it.

e.g.....my rig is way too powerful for 1080p, plus it's a total waste of time OCing it to 4.4, i only ever use it a few hours a day, i use this one instead, it's just a giant 800 quid console :D

I was thinking the same for my prodigy build, but I have a 670. More than enough for 1080pp gaming as far as I can see.

deffo, i got my 7970 cheap so i'm not too fed up over it....but i'm now wondering if i want to build a new custom case, i've got a few ideas running around in my head, i like the idea of a better version of the Antec Skeleton

AlsO might be worth waiting to see what the 7990 is like!

i dont think there will be a 7990, i think it's called something else; or they've dumped it, because the 7990 was due out a month ago !

wasn't it called the Firepro !!!!! if so i wouldn't bother, too late now, let Nvidia win this one, concentrate on the next generation instead

Guys, guys, you can't fit two GPU's in the prodigy, so quit recommending the poor guy SLI GTX680's and such :p

Go,Go GTX 680......I lurv mine! :) as it beasts everything maxxed out at 1900x1200.

GTX 690 is ridiculous for 1 monitor 1080p setup........bit like buying a Lamborghini and living in a country where all the roads are 30mph speed limits.

The 690 won't be a treat, it'll be a waste of money. They're only useful if you need that kind of card NOW. If not, by the time you do need it it'll have been obsolete for a long time.

I can't be bothered to read through this whole thread again but from memory he has 1080, 2D and 60 Hz?

If so then I agree completely. A 690 is an absolute waste.

1080, 2D and 60Hz.

I think the problem is people are coming in to thread, not reading the OP or any other posts and then just going "HERP DERP TREAT YO' SELF BRAH".

I very nearly did buy for my prodigy build -but saw sense in the end. :)

If I wanted multi-monitor gaming then I would have to go for one or similar next gen card as my ickle case only has the one PCI slot. :)
