Guild Wars 2

Serious? So far it's been the best launch I can remember of an MMO, and that's even including the fact I'm currently unable to log in.

Well what other MMO's have you tried to play on launchday? For me in recent memory:

WoW
SRO (free Korean game that managed things fine)
AoC
WAR
TERA

All of those had working log-on servers on launch-- even if in-game experience was laggy as hell and full of congestion and constant drops. You could at least get past the game launcher. Been stuck on that for 2 hours now with this GW2 'advance launch'. Not saying it's the end of the world, but a little confused how "every other MMO launch" you have experienced has been worse. How can it be worse? The desktop shortcut icon didn't even manage to open the launcher, or something?

It's not easy to test for the number of connections, and no doubt malicious attempts on the guild wars servers. The log in server could be down for a number of reasons, probably sheer volume but it's to be expected if you ask me.

Yes, I did pay in advance partly because I would receive the early start, but come on, this game is so huge that you expect something to go wrong. When I get in to the game again, I expect to find some bugs, I do also expect them to be fixed with time.

Hundreds of thousands of people will be trying to log in right now. More than they will ever have again. It's not really easy to handle this huge amount of load under any circumstances even if it's predictable.

I think they did a good job. I signed in and it was running smoother than it did before. They have been brilliant with their public facing contact through their website. Yeah, I can't log in right now, and that sucks a little but I said yesterday to my partner it's probably going to be really flaky all day today... expected.

It is one day of a game I plan to play for years.. I don't really think it takes that much away from it.
I think people need to give the GW team some support on their fantastic work, they're no doubt all extremely worn out after the push to get this live so just being hateful towards them doesn't really help things.

They did a good job... it'll be ok soon i'm sure.

I did get in for a while until it booted me out of the game in the middle of gameplay saying my password was wrong. I played for about 30-40 minutes, and it was looking really good. I now can't log in again... but i'm sure it will be fixed.
For the little difference it will make, I would ask people to only click "log in" every 10-15 minutes or so... hammering that button won't help matters.

"the game client is unable to gain access to the login server at this time"

Is this the standard error message at the moment?

it is the one im having yup, I got a few hours in. Spent most of my time trying to find a friend through those gate things (im a noob :p) and then went for a bite to eat, got kicked and cant log now. Hopefully it'll be back up soon.

If you have no experience of MMO's, would it not not be more sensible to ask people of what to expect, and not to complain before knowing anything?

But that would mean I would have suspicions of what happens at launch. Which I didn't.
Seems some people like to blow things out of proportion on here. Not sure how me saying I was a bit annoyed translates to me crying or whining.
At most I'm disappointed.

The amount of idiots in this thread is astounding.

This launch has gone better than most and just because they're having a bit of problems within the first 7-8hours people are crying and bitching.

All MMOs(or online-only games) have teething problems at first. Get over it, man the **** up whatever you need to do to stop acting like a 7 year old.

Again, this same routine line. Yes, all MMO's have their problems. But having a log-in/auth server being totally down for the first few hours is pretty much as big of a failure as you can get. Most MMO's 'launch day woes' are to do with in-game performance, zone congestion, client drops, etc. People can't even log into their account with GW2 :o I think people's complaints and confusion are perfectly justified, considering they had about 4 'stress tests' to prevent just this sort of thing. Many other MMO's which experience 'problems' do not have this benefit.

You can hardly say they are 'overwhelmed'. They knew exactly how many people to expect.
