I'm considering upgrading to an i3 but on a VERY limited budget.

Would it be worth upgrading from an e6750 to an i3 530? I am aware I'd have to get a new mobo and DDR3 RAM.

I'm thinking it could be a good stepping stone.

Cheers

If you can get it cheap then go for it. It will be a nice upgrade and they are excellent clockers. If it's the full retail price then you would be better off going for a 2100 and a Z77 board so that you will be able to stick in a Sandy/Ivy K series at a later date and overclock.

Remember that the i3 2100 can't be overclocked. The i3 530 will quite comfortably overclock to 3.8ghz or near making it quicker and can be picked up cheap on the used market.

Though if i was buying new now i would look to get a cheap sandybridge setup.

I know the 530 is a good OC`er, but my post was made in reference to Stulid`s.
If the OP can get one secondhand as pastymuncher says then ,yes but the I3 2100 would offer him a better long term upgrade path. At the end of the day, it comes down to what the OP can afford and what best suits his needs.

actually beats the SB i3s if you can get a 20% OC or more on it (I think it'd have to be around 3.5Ghz, but 3.8 or more is very possible).

Up until a week or so ago I had an i3 550 overclocked to 4.2Ghz (if I remember correctly), it was leaps and bounds ahead of my Core2Duo that I had prior to it! So it's definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

I just made my final upgrade (to an i5 750) before I have to change the motherboard, mainly because I wanted a Quad core and my i3 was bottlenecking my GTX 670 slightly (also had issues running TF2 in multicore rendering mode, whereas my i5 is fine strangely enough).

You are limiting yourself upgrade-potential wise, as you can only slap in an i5 750/760 or an i7 860/870 pretty much after this. For now though the 750's are still going very strong it seems, as most games have been held back by this generation of consoles anyway.

I would recommend going i5 530 now, because it is socket 1156.

i3 21xx is better than i5 5xx because of being on socket 1155 (with upgrade path to Sandy/Ivy i5, but also despite they cannot be overclocked, with their higher IPC Sandy cores it would still be around as fast as i5 5xx at may be around 4.0GHz.

Anyway, nobody should get either i3 5xx or Sandy i3 21xx now, since the Ivy I3 3xxx comparing around 2nd-3rd September (if no more delays).

But still, the best option even with a tight budget would be to get a £80 Z77 motherboard, and a 2nd hand i5 2500K for around £120.

go sandy or ivy, seems pretty pointless going to a 530 now. if you cant afford it just now save up, it will give you the option to upgrade in the future
