Thought he might step down as el captain but to retire? Did not see that coming!

Cook to take the reigns as test captain...

Thoughts? Shocked to be honest!

One of the worst outcomes is that we will have to listen to the boring Captain Cook interviews.

He's certainly not the most dynamic character, but then, Strauss isn't either. He's got a good cricket brain and is the most logical choice. I'd like to think he'll come out of his shell a bit - but from Swanny's tweets - I'm not expecting too much :)

Come as somewhat a surprise to me, i was really expecting him to stand down as captain and see if he could regain some form in the india series. The things going on within the team as of late must have just pushed him to the point of no return.
Maybe for the best jumping ship before it sinks, can't think of an opener at the standard required to replace him especially going straight for an foreign tour, i just hope this doesnt open the door for KP to return, his ego will be no help to a team who are required to rebuild if they want to hold onto the ashes next year.

England now lacking a steady opener, a big hitter and a reliable mid order batsman and a couple of bowlers who look to be on the decline. Looking in as much trouble as australia have been for the past couple of years.

I don't see Strauss as a "step down and retain form" type of guy. I agree we are missing an obvious replacement opener, and that is certainly an issue. In the short term (assuming we don't find a miracle draft before India), I expect Trott to get bumped up; I know he doesn't like it, but I don't see anyone else in the squad capable.

As for big hitters and mid-order, I'm not really worried. KP was a luxury; nice to have, but failed too often and that type of player isn't essential. Bairstow has looked very useful and Prior is more than able to jump up a few places, if need be.

Bowling is all smiles as well. Anderson and Swann haven't been great recently, but Finn and Bres can hold an end and we still have Onions coming back to form and Dernbach getting better. Plus, some handy spinners in the wings should they be needed.

Some people are being a little doom-and-gloom about English cricket; we haven't been that great, but I think too many are trying to compare us to the freakishly good Australian, Indian, and Windies sides that have dominated the last generation; we aren't that good, we never were, but we are still one of the best teams around.

Disagree. He's been a brilliant captain but it was the right time for him to go. He has been seriously under par with the bat as long as I can remember now. Time to let somebody else in the side and Cook has shown himself to be capable as a one day captain.

Good get KP back now.

Strauss has batted like a reserve player for a pub team for ages so as an opener he won't be missed, we can reshuffle and also re-insert one of crickets best batsmen back in. Win/win!

Strauss was good in his day but him acting like a butthurt teenager over the KP stuff and dropping the man who could have helped us win game 3 has tainted him in my mind. Acted like a kid at the death rather than a good captain which is a shame.

Would he have stepped down if England had won the test series?

Nope.

Probably not, but what's your point? The guy has been suriving off England's overall performances rather than his individual batting ability for at least a couple of years. Now that the team's performances have dried up it's right that he goes.
