Also I just watched a more recent Samurai flick but can't remember the name of it, it had a supremely epic battle at the end after they fortified a village. There is a dude they found in teh woods that fights with them... someone should know it.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Gonna throw in Kung Fu Hustle as a wildcard ..... its more of a comedy/slapstick/action movie with inspiration from Loony Tunes and Charlie Chaplin ....its a really good movie if you give it a chance.
 
Irreversible is very good (violent though).

I enjoyed Battle Royale as well (the first one).

Most of the others I would recommend have already been mentioned I think :)

I cant believe no one has mentioned 'A Prophet' yet, fantastic film and was on Film4 recently so if thy repeat, keep a look out.
