August 30, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the launch of Steam Greenlight, a new platform feature that enlists the community’s help in selecting some of the next games to be released on Steam.

Announced earlier this summer, Steam Greenlight allows developers and publishers to post information and media about their game in an effort to convince the Community that the game should be released on Steam. Greenlight piggybacks on Steam Workshop’s flexible system that organizes content and lets customers rate and leave feedback.

“We’ve been working on this feature for the last few months with the input from a group of indie partners, and the response has been extremely positive,” said Valve’s Anna Sweet. “With the additional help of beta testers, we are able to launch with a solid line-up of titles for the community to start viewing and rating. And, as we’ve done with all Steam features, we intend to continually grow and modify Greenlight as more and more developers and community members have a chance to get involved.”

As well as serving as a clearing house for game submissions, Greenlight provides an incredible level of added exposure for new games and an opportunity to connect directly with potential customers and fans.

I thought this was meant for up-and-coming indie producers and stuff, yet LayerNet, that company that makes all those utter **** simulator games has uploaded all of their carp games catalogue.

Therefore, why would I use this when if I check the 'simulator' category as I did because those usually interest me, I get presented with those. And I already know the quality (or lack of) of the finished product.

like the look of cognition, indy point and click adventure, jane jensen apparently gave advice on! just looked at the demo, animation looks better than gray matter which anoyed me about that game lol. , the multiple paths through completion look cool as well - thats kind of where the point and click adventure genre needs to go imo, bit of replayability.

There are some good games on there, but too many are getting a decent pile of votes, then voted down back to zero. Combined with biased indie pack deals, no way to see the games with the most votes, fake posts, no way to sort full games from pre-alphas, I really don't like it much at the moment. It has potential though.

Voted up these:

Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=93045414
Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage is a fast-paced addictive combat racing game for the PC. The game features many different vehicles, weapons, upgrades, on-track bonuses as well as distinctive and astonishing environments.

Depth Hunter
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=93069545
Depth Hunter offers 25 exciting missions in which players will hunt different fish species and face the difficulties of breath-holding spearfishing, an ancient fishing method. Players will also have to fight predators, can find treasures and get the possibility to take underwater photos to capture the beauty of the simulated, detailed and lively underwater worlds they’re exploring also in a free mode.

I dont see the point in this.

why not have them all and see what sells. its like ocuk asking who do you prefer amd or nvidia. nvidia? fine we will only stock nvidia.

^

not really. This allows valve to see what will sell by seeing whether there's a market for it. Rather than having to go through the process of discussing whether the markets there or not and what direction the game needs to be developed in to become viable for steam, this gives them that information instantly.

Not keen on the fact they are placing smaller publishers with niche titles onto Greenlight.

How do they determine the "trigger" amount for Euro Truck simulator for example?

Same for Handball 2012, never going to get massive votes.
