IPHONE CHARGING PORT RUMOR

I believe it is magsafe, from the leaked shots/info.

From the leaked shots it looks like the ground is what you're probably thinking is the magsafe, it will still need to be plugged into the device (not sitting on the edge like magsafe). Being able to plug it in in any orientation is a big positive for them, I think a lot of people damage the dock connector by not checking which way fits and forcing it in. I've had dock connectors and devices since the original iPod and I'm happy to see them move away from such a legacy connector, removing things like firewire etc and making it smaller can only be good for the phone battery life!

Not sure how they'd pull off adapters tbh, a lot of devices have bespoke cradles.

If it happens, there will be many, many issues and annoyed/frustrated users.

No Apple keep things different so you can't use that micro USB cable that EVERY other device uses.

But the dock connector is past it's time, the replacement is an improvement and will save a lot of space on devices. Of course there'll be adaptors.

Exactly, apple use a connector that no one else does.
This is what I hate about them ;)
They change it, patent it, licence it, and make further cash from something that could have been standard.
Why did computers of 5 years ago have 1 firewire port, yet 8 usbs. They didn't have to pay through the nose to add the usbs.

Im all for the new port, much better than the old one and better than micro usb, which breaks easily and can only put in one way.

Dunno about that the only devices I have with broken connectors are Apple connectors and the odd 3.5mm jack. All the Sony, SE, USB connectors are all fine after years of use.

Because its smaller than the current one and can be used either way up, oh, and because USB is crap for these devices...

I guess I wasn't thinking of accessories tbh, so I stand corrected. But considering the size of the accessory market, the extra pins make some sense from that POV for sure.

The only accessories in our house are a portable speaker and alarm clock, we don't use the apple port on either because you need different adapter plates for different ipod versions, and one of our iPods the connection is very iffy. We use the 3.5mm jack usually.

This new port isn't that much smaller though is it? There looks like loads of room on the iPhone 5 for a regular dock. But I guess its other devices like the nano and shuffle where size is more of an issue.

I'd rather have an accessory connector that changes once every ten years or so, than the complete lack of accessories that the Android ecosystem has (Android Open Accessory really took off didn't it).

Would you not get you'd get all that functionality in the box, with a similar priced android phone, its just a couple of cables, but at a fraction of the cost that apple equivalent costs?

Can't stand Micro USB tbh. I have broken the connectors twice in the past by just brushing past them accidentally vs the rock solid 30pin effort. So I welcome a new dock connector.

I don't know, you're the one who seems to be on the side rallying against Apple's dock connector, maybe you should find out.

I've never seen an Android handset that I'd actually want to use that can output a VGA signal, for what it's worth. Nor have I seen a way to import images from a digital camera into one. It has to exist before it can be 'a fraction of the cost' of the Apple version.

How on earth do you do that there's no hook on it to catch it should just pull straight out with any pressure?

Well yeah it will pull out if you're applying a force in the pull-it-out direction. It's also possible to knock them on the side or one of the faces. That's how to destroy a Micro USB connector. The plug is specifically designed to be weaker than the socket, so that a cheap cable breaks instead of an expensive device. Unfortunately this means that breathing on it is enough to damage it. I've been through 4 Micro USB charging cables in 18 months because they just stopped staying in the socket.

Not really just curious at exploring the reasons for it. Low cost of peripherals and lack of functionality on USB was given as a reason.

You can get USB OTG to connect to camera and a Micro USB to VGA cable if you wanted it. Also mini-HDMI connector or MHL.

Dunno what kinda cables you are using. We regularly hang a USB battery back from a micro usb cable, and aren't gentle with putting them in and out of devices with no breakages. Thats using branded and un branded cables.

Apples cables tend to be premium quality I wonder are you using similar quality usb cables otherwise it's not comparing like for like in terms of breakages. I find mini usb break more often but then I abuse them more and tend to acquire lots of cheap mini cables

Yeah, I know those standards exist, but how many handsets actually support them? That's the point, not whether it's a possibility or not.

The Micro USB cables I've broken have been a mixture of Nokia and HTC branded, so the ones supplied with devices, same as the Apple cables I've never broken.

A lot of the high end phones support such things. It's not that unusual.

Probably the best case for the apple connector is for things like car kits.

But then again it's more about having a one or three phones in your product range rather than 30 or 40 that others have and no constancy to the port placement or chassis design.

At the end of the day your buying into the apple ecosystem so proprietary cables and connectors are minor details.
