I want to propose, need advice...

Just propose to her with a polo mint then take her out to buy one. She’ll understand that you meant well. :p

Dont.

A week after asking my lovely lady and saying "36months, no less than 30" shes already got viewings at venues and has looked at dates as soon as October 2013...

Im getting ulcers.

There was no way I was buying the ring for my wife before she saw it.

I ended up proposing using a Haribo jelly ring, but put it in a real ring box.

Yes, it was a bit sad doing it that way, but better than a lifetime of days spent peering into jewelery shops every time you go to town with 'why didnt you get that one'

Not sad, makes sense :)

Buy ring, get it re-sized (if you want to choose)
Buy novelty ring, go together to get a real one (if she wears the trousers ;))

p.s. Baked goods are the way to go

I got a giant heart Millie's cookie that said 'Will you Marry Me' on it

It worked and you get to eat it afterwards, nom nom

LOL @ your abortion drink

You buggers call yourselves geeks? I hacked into her email, looked up the size of the last ring she ordered, then ordered a ring from an on-line jeweller. Problem solved without stepping away from the keyboard.

And she really liked the ring I chose.

Ha haaaa - I was waiting for some 'ring' related humour to come back ;) thought you all could have done better though tbh!

She's Swedish so her mother lives 1400 miles away... might try the piece of string bit, although I'm not sure the excuse would wash :)

Pics. It's the (unwritten) law.

All girls love it when you investigate their ring size in their sleep, half of them don't even know about it the next morning!

Such a romantic surprise

I've got 8 more pay days before my wedding and still a helluva lot to pay for. Yet I find myself wanting to buy more and more pc parts/upgrades.

I managed to pinch the ring she wears on the next finger along and went for one size down. At one point I had ideas on using a strip from a post-it note while she was asleep, which you can probably get away with.

As for jewellers, I went to one recommended by an older friend. They buy in the diamonds but create the sets/rings themselves in the workshop at the back so I had a lot of flexibility in the design and made it unique. Sure it cost a bit more doing it that way but it was worth it as I had the peace of mind that I had spoken to the jeweller, got some good advice and seen the ring prior to purchase. If I didn't like his workmanship I could walk away.

Ensure you get a certificate for the ring and make sure you insure it independently or as a valuable item on your home insurance with items away from the property included.

I don't want to hijack the thread but i've been considering proposing recently.

How much do you spend on a ring? Is 3 months wages really the going rate?

People say that but I know plenty of girls who expect the best no matter what and plenty who would be unhappy that amount of money was being spent when it could have been put for other things. You're the best one to answer this one as you know who you are asking!

I think she would be really annoyed if I spent that kind of money on a ring.

I was thinking £800ish but not sure what kind of ring you can get for that.

Thats roughly what I spent, got a nice diamond on 18ct white gold, with small diamonds on the "shoulders" of the ring. She was very happy with it.

Also bear in mind, there is a fashion these days to "Upgrade" the engagement ring after you have been married for a number of years - getting ridiculously expensive now makes that much more expensive in the future.
