Hey. I have this CPU at the minute and wanted to try my first overclock. I came across a program on my computer CPU level up or something and was going to try this. I think it brings it up to a 965 maybe. I was wondering if you had any advice on this, or another way of doing it.

I don't want to damage the system not knowing what I am at. if anyone has this CPU and overclocked it I would be interested in hearing about it.

overclock in the bios dnt bother with software.

u shud b able to get about 4ghz from it.

Do u have an aftermarket cooler?

Make sure you have a good CPU cooler first, the stock AMD one is small and loud...

And scrap the software, always use the BIOS to overclock, it's usually more stable than software overclocking. I had the 965 C3 stepping but it should be similiar anyway.

It's a BE chip so all you need to do is raise the multiplier, then stress test this with something like Prime95 for 10 mins or so, then overclock further if you want. Raise the CPU voltage when needed, I think it was 1.5v that was the absolute highest? Once you find an overclock you're willing to settle with, run Prime95 again for 8 hours or so just to ensure it's fully stable.

Also keep check on the temps as well, 62c is the highest. Bare in mind some monitoring software reports the core temp, which is usually false as there are no temp sensors built in on the chip, you want to check the overall CPU temp.

The 955 should easily do 3.6ghz on stock voltages though if you want an easy overclock.

Yes I got this cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler installed on it. I reckon it is a decent cooler? I could be wrong

Now you mentioned that it was a BE (Black Edition) and to use the multiplier. Is that something that will stand out on the BIOS. Also do I then raise the voltage after the multiplier. Does raising the voltage increase the GHz aswell or is it just the multiplier. I guess my question is why raise the voltage of the CPU?

Thanks for the explanation!

increasing multiplyer or bus speed will increase ghz.

be means you only really need to change the multiplyer.

you only need to increase voltage if after you have overclocked it BSOD's then increase voltage to make it stable.

You should get 3.6ghz at least out of that cooler

Sweet, 3.6ghz is better than 3.2ghz. Are there any coolers you would recommend that would allow me to hit 3.8 or 4.0ghz? I will try later when I get home from work and check out the multiplier.

4Ghz is quite rare for 955 chips. I was only able to get 3.8 and it required volts greater than 1.55 to keep stable. Loads of others settled at 3.8 as well. Depends on what silicon you get, not the cooler.

3.8ghz is the "standard" overclock, my 965BE won't even do that now.

Average
c2 stepping 3.5-3.6 ghz
c3 stepping 3.8-4.0 ghz
c3 later revision 4.0- 4.2

Don't forget to clock the the cpu-nb I see this so many times,
Oh phenom just up the multi and leave it at that. (No theres more to it than that)

(If I could edit the c2 stepping then my orginial 3.5-3.6 was for the athlon c2's, And deneb = phenom II was 3.7-3.8)

I disagree on the C2 stepping bit. I bought mine before the C3 came out and 3.8ghz was definitely the standard OC. A couple would do 3.9ghz but not many.

I ran mine at 3.8ghz for ages (2 years) before it started degrading and running very hot/unstable.

depends how hard you push the chip, my x4 620 c2 clocked to 3.9, Although I agree the phenom II c2 did scale higher on average 3.7-,3.8, I was thinking of the athlon c2 avg overclock. As i've owned all steppings and built god knows how many am2+ am3 systems I've seen the average from my own findings. The c2's get hot once they hit a brickwall at around 1.475v.

Did you run your overclock with cool and quiet enabled, my overclocks always have, hence saves the mosfets and cpu.

Hey thanks for all that advice. I have no idea what c1/c2/c3 stepping is. I will try one of those coolers you suggested, and use the multiplier to Overclock it!
