well i know that 8800gtx is quite old, but i still have one because i don't have enough money for a new graphics card. so anyway, i was testing it with kombustor and i found that when i ran the stress tests, the gpu usage would shoot straight up to 98% and stay around that value, while the temps climbed to around 65 degrees, which is ok, although the fan was on 100%... is any of that normal, or is my gpu dying, and i need to replace it?

High usage is a good thing, it means you're getting the most for your money, and that there is no bottleneck holding your gpu back.

hmm... sounds good, but it certainly doesn't like it when that happens. sometimes it crashes and Windows comes up with graphics error message...

crashing/artifacts are not caused by high usage, but potentially by many other factors.

It could be:

driver issues
gpu dieing (age, misuse etc)
gpu memory/core overclocked too high / voltage too low foroverclock
temperature too high

etcetc

Yeah pretty much as said, it's always good to see your gpu working as that's what it's there to do, but if you are experiencing crashes etc it could be on it's way out or a number of other things, always a nightmare finding out. :p What temperatures does it get to before it crashes?

it gets around about 75 degrees when it crashes, which is a bit odd =, i thought, seeing as though people talk about graphics cards reaching the 90s and 100s

Have you OC'd your 8800GTX? As I aso have an 8800GT which I have found out recently no longer likes any amount of overclocking. (Even with my after market heatsink on.)

i OC'd it a bit, but it wasn't by huge amounts. was @ 576, now at 628, and the shader clock is at 1020, but it was at 900. it didn't seem too bothered by it, but most of the time i run it on stock values, to extend life, as i only have a stock fan.

Not all GPUs are the same. Some love an OC, some don't. Rather like women haha

Fiar enough I had mine at a 24/7 overclock for the last 4 years so overclock dosen't spound like an issue.

Could still be driver related issues
