What to do in this situation? (ebay)

Honestly bud unless you want the headache I would be saying you will refund him but ask him to cover your initial shipping costs as your taking it back in good faith and that if its found to be damaged by negligence you will be taking it up with ebay.

The ebay rules are that unfortunately you need to refund their initial postage but you are under no obligation to pay for the postage on returning the item, thats down to them.

Yeah. I would not take that back from a noob, could be damaged. I always specify no returns, but i'm unsure what this really means. I bet paypal would roger me if someone complained. I rarely sell on ebay as it's so biast towards buyers now.

Ok his reply...

Hi, I am sorry that you feel this way, but it doesn't work for me.
The board and ram have already gone back.
The distance selling regs apply to any "buy it now / second chance offers" but not auctions.
You also recieve your seller fees back.
I am losing about £20-25 as the board return is costing £15 and so i am not doing this lightly!
You will also be able to relist without a fee.
So if you could please accept the return and email me a return address i would be very grateful.
Thanks,

Craig.

Tell him to jog-on, it's a private sale.
If he's unsure of what the problem is, that's his issue - the fact it is a known-to-be working CPU only adds to that.
You probably should have stipulated it a bit clearer on your "30 day warranty" though, as a good intention it's great, but it just causes hassle such as this.

True, it just makes my items sell quicker, but yep, one guy ruining it for everyone else :(

I need to copy and paste my answer from previous threads

Offer to take it back
Hope to receive item back in condition sent
Open case
Get all costs back minus postage

Worst case
You refuse to accept it back
Case is opened by biyer
He wins.. 99% chance
He gets annoyed
Breaks CPU/sends you back dud/sends you back envelop
You loose the money, the item, and the eBay fees

Just accept the return, theres nothing you can do about it. If he opens up a dispute ebay will side with him anyway.

90% of the time what ever you sold will be fine, just that the noob couldnt get it working. Dodnt give him any reason to break it and send it back that way.

I know I realise that :(

I also had a nice chat on ebay live support:

Carl Ewans
Welcome to eBay Live Help, my name is Carl. How may I be of assistance?

tomas
Hi, my buyer wants to return a working item because they do not know how to use it. I am not a business seller and it was a private sale on a buy it now, so do I have to accept this back?
Carl Ewans
I do understand your situation on this. Aside from your buyer that wants to return the item,is there anything else you would like me to look into for you?

tomas
No that is all, I just don't think I should be having to accept things back because he can not use them?
Carl Ewans
I will just need a moment while I check this for you. Please stay connected Tomas.

Carl Ewans
Thank you for patiently waiting. Since the buyer already filed a Return case, all you have to do is accept it. Once you already do this, the buyer will be oblige to post the item to you again, with that, it is your option if you wantt o replace or refund the payment of the buyer.
tomas
The item works, he has told me that. I do not see why I should accept the return.
Carl Ewans
Alright. If that is the case, you will have the option to reject the Return case. The process goes like this, once you reject the Return case, the buyer will file a Not as describe case, on they have do that, all you ned to do is respond to the said case with a helpful information so when our Resolution team investigate on this there will be a possibility that the case will be close on your favor.
tomas
I think its a small possibility and I will just end up having to accept it back, don't you?
tomas
How about if I accept the return case and then get the item back and it works? I'll still have to refund him won't I?
Carl Ewans
In this case, there will be a possibility that there is no need for you to refund them. It is your descretion, since you are confident the the item is not working there is no required action for you to do so.
tomas
ok, and what if the buyer then does not want it back?
Carl Ewans
On that case you are not required to refund or accept the case.
Carl Ewans
Sorry for the delayed response as I am having a Technical difficulties.
tomas
but like you say, he'll just open a case and probably win, so i am just going to lose out whatever happens
Carl Ewans
In this case, seller most likely wins as we belive that there is no seller will post an item that is not working.
tomas
Ok thank you
Carl Ewans
Welcome, it is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for contacting eBay Live help. Goodbye and take care.
The last part made me laugh.

So thanks for the help guys, I have accepted the return and I am still going to tell him it works fine and then dispute it when it comes back, according to Carl Ewans I should win, I highly highly highly doubt it though :(

Carl Ewans is talking out of his backside, just dont refund him his postage so atleast that way it cost you nothing.

I would have come to some agreement with him where you get a small fee for your troubles. He's not a scammer, and from his e-mails he seems like a polite, rational human being who's just had problems....haven't we all at some point, especially when we were PC noobs? There are plenty of idiots on Ebay and most times I would go with the "jog on" brigade. However, due to the majority of scumbags, I would be inclined to cut this guy a bit of slack.

I get the impression this guy has overspent and simply wants rid of the components to get his money back.

Wonder what excuses he used to returned the motherboard/ram.

I think some people here are confusing the distance selling regulations with the sale of goods act, no seller business or private can refuse to refund faulty goods.

And yes a faulty cpu can cause the computer to restart.

You ARE going to get bent over, ebay are NOT going to side with you what so ever. So prepare to be raped and refund him. I would try a 15% restocking fee as others seem to get away with it.

Any rational person wouldn't return the motherboard/ram if the CPU was faulty though would they.

Maybe just an amicable email asking if he'd be OK paying for the return postage and for your relisting fees? Seems like a rational enough bloke to agree to that.

Should have asked him what time it is in Bangalor as his grasp of English is shocking and he's talking out his arse.

Tell him to send it back, refund nothing until you get it and check hes sent the same CPU. Test if possible, refund but minus a restock fee to cover your postage and listing costs.

Then never use fleabay again
