how much do you tip for haircuts?

£12 - £2 tip. 'tis not much and I reason that as they're are cutting my hair perhaps the 'tip' might persuade them to take a bit more effort next time I'm there.

Thought it was the normal thing to do, but judging by the skinflints in this thread, perhaps tipping is just a local thing. I've only used the same barbers for 20+ years and everyone else there does it. :p

Skinflints? Local thing? I dunno... I've lived in two of the most expensive/high-standard postcodes in the country... and nobody tips. Maybe your local customs are just nonsensical? Maybe, conversely, people in your area aren't paid enough by their managers/salon owners? Perhaps it's a lower-wage economy? Who knows :p

Those that are paid less, tip more often.

Yep, as mentioned before, in the salon my gf front-desks, standard appointments start at like £75. You get a champagne service for that. Nobody expects a tip when it works out at like £150/hr per stylist.

I didn't tip, used to pay £15 (by card)... Went up to £25 then decided to cut it myself.

No one has ever mentioned it looks different which is a bonus^

Even when people are getting the same service, I've found as well as others who I've spoken to within the service industry, the poorer tip more so than the rich. Perhaps that's because they'll understand that an extra couple of quid can make quite a difference to someone on a low wage. Who knows. Probably a dissertation topic in there somewhere.

Champagne with a haircut..lol These the type that dress their dogs in outfits and carry them around like babies?

From what I can gather its 60-something widows of bankers that live in big lonely houses in Surrey and fill up the rest of their days with thrice-weekly salon and spa trips.

One of her most frequent customers is an aged Austrian widow who is part of some minor aristocratic lineage somewhere.

These people exist. And they like a good haircut.

i don't tip, they set their price so they should be happy with it.

Not true.

The establishment sets the prices. The hairdresser may be working on an ad hoc basis, and might even have to pay the owner to pitch there (a percentage of their earnings for the day kicked back to the owner).

Therefore the better job they do, the more chance of a tip, the better their wages. Ergo you should reward them accordingly.

Haircut costs £8 and I tip £2.

The reason I tip £2 is because the Turkish barber does other stuff like burning the ear hair off and really takes his time making sure he gets any stray hairs and doesn’t rush using a cut throat razor to go round the edges and what not.

I don't. The fact I'm there means they do a consistently good job, my repeat custom is their reward for a good job. I don't see any value for me in tipping.
