I hear there meant to be very good at making animations and are better than most disney films. Im 26 and i watched a couple trailers and they look really impressive:o

Personally I would suggest the following:
Spirited Away
Howls Moving Castle
Arrietty
Ponyo
Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Spirited Away one the best animation Oscar in 2003 and is a really, really good film.

The following are still really good but I wouldn't rank them as highly in spectacle if you want something really good to "beat" Disney ...
My Neighbour Totoro
Pom Poko
Porco Rosso
The Cat Returns
Whisper of the Heart
Kiki's Delivery Service
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Princess Mononoke
Tales of Earthsea

I would suggest in your case avoiding the following; they are still good films in most cases but they have points against them unless you are already a Ghibli fan ...
Ocean Waves
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Only Yesterday

(lists in each section are in order of preference)

All are available in the UK, normally cheaply on DVD although some are available on BD now as well, with Howl and Earthsea due on that format in June/July.

(Yes, I have them all)

my favourite ones bolded :) can watch em again and again.

My favourite Ghibli's are probably

Totoro
Laputa castle in the Sky
Spirited away
Whisper of the Heart
and
Porco Russo

Although pretty much all of them are very good, and my top 5 change on a fairly regular basis (Totoro, Spirited and Porco all stay in there, but vary a lot)
I think I've got all the ones that have been released now, except Ocean Waves, and that's on hold because I've got the DVD's of the others, but I'm getting the Blu's as they are released (and there is no point in getting the DVD version now - although I have also got two copies of Spirited Away* and Grave on DVD).

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen some of the Ghibli's, Mononoke was one of my early Anime DVD's (I got the version with the book), and has been watched so many times whilst I've been working on PC's.

I've not watched it myself but I've heard it's a terribly sad film.

I haven't watched too many Studio Ghibli films (3 or 4 at last count) but Spirited Away is definitely well worth a watch if you've got even a passing interest in animation or more simply a good story.

Lets put it this way, it's pretty much the complete opposite of Totoro (and from memory was done at the same time, and sometimes shown as a double feature).

It's a box of tissues film, and one that although I bought a copy from the US about 6 years ago, then the UK release, I've only ever watched once.
It's pretty bleak.

*The lovely R4 limited release with the fold out cover of the bath house, and the UK release.

I'd be tempted to say you should pick it up on DVD. Unlike most of the other Ghibli films listed it was made for TV on a limited budget so will it get the same treatment as the other main titles ... we'll have to see ... but given that you can get it normally for £6 in the usual sales I'd say just grab it anyway for now ...

(note I am biased, I actually really like Ocean Waves it's a slice of life film, unlike the main fantasy Ghibli films, but for me was a lot better than Only Yesterday. I own the UK DVD release and the subbed JP release (which was out quite a bit before the UK release))

Though I am afraid I am going to have to mention A Girl Who Leapt Through Time, not Ghibli but worth watching, you won't be disappointed.

If you only watch one I'd go with Laputa.

Not sure why no-one else has mentioned it but Castle of Cagliostro is one of the earliest and best Ghibli films I think.

It's a good film, although technically, whilst it's a Miyazaki, it was released ~5.5 years before Studio Ghibli was formed so isn't one of their releases.

watched it on sunday night. it's pretty :( but i enjoyed it
i just love old anime where it relies on the story rather than lots of visuals
and it was subtitled which is the only way i like to watch anime if possible (not too many silly americanism translations ;)

would like to see more from ghibli

I have all released on DVD in the silver band collection so far. I love them all but Kiki's Delivery Service is probably the worst.

Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Grave of the Fireflies

Be warned, Grave of the Fireflies is probably the saddest, most depressing film every made. But it is also very moving and beautifully written.

If you haven't watched it, don't read the next bit!

Am I the only one that spent the whole movie just waiting for something, anything nice to happen?
