Living in Bristol... Bristolians advise!

I wouldn't bother driving to work unless they provide you with a space. I live in BS1 and parking is damn expensive and the queues I see from my window at rush hour don't look like much fun.

Lovely city to live in though, I live with friends just by Queen Square which cost £1k a month for a 3 bed flat. You can get a nice harbour side 1 bed flat for about £800 a month if living in the centre takes your fancy but give up on having a guaranteed parking space.

Edit: I'm actually disappointed at the lack of a proper Bristolian accent in the centre, most people speak quite proper. I rather like girls that have it though, it's different. ;)

I'm reading most places that reflect the driving being not an option... I think I'd be quite sad if I had to sell up the car :(.

Adding it up though:

Parking 2k
Servicing / MOT £300
Insurance £800
Fuel £1k+

I would probably sacrifice that, and get a place in central Bristol - As if I lived that close anyway it wouldn't get driven which is a waste of a good car.

Your insurance seems high and your maintenance costs seem low. Have you worked this out properly?

I don't have a banger, so yes the costs are low . Unless I factor in tyres £800 etc. Fortunately tyres don't get much use driving at 20 mph in a city however.

And at 23, insurance will always be that high.

I'm sure you know best, just pointing out that even the most reliable of cars tend to cost more than 300 quid a year to keep on the road. But you're not including tyres and probably not including BMW service intervals etc so I'll shut up. Hope you find a place you like.

If it was a BMW I would be more worried about cost ;). It's the other Z.

:D

If you're 23 you shouldn't let a silly car dictate where you live. Especially somewhere with as good transport links as Bristol. You could have a much nicer pad and drop the penis extension.

A few of my colleagues visited those apartments as they were our old office. Apparently they are a bit on the small side.

I would suggest Redland may be a decent location. Who are you working for in Bristol if you don't mind me asking?

Redland is in the same sort of territory as Stoke Bishop which I liked the look of... are the travel routes from there quick/easy into main town?

In regards to latter I'd rather not say.

That's quite arrogant... some people like football, some like going out and getting ****ed, some taking drugs... fortunately I do none of those so well within my right to spend on things I enjoy. A car is a car, not a penis extension... some people care more about what they drive because it's a pleasure not a chore.

Anyway, I would probably sell it if I went to Bristol regardless, as getting into the city to park seems counter productive.

What I meant is that you'd get a much better value-for-money living in a nicer place than you would driving an over-expensive car around at 20mph, as you put it.

I would highly recommend Redland having lived there for 2 years. Fairly quiet, nice houses, really close to Stoke's Croft / Gloucester road and only 20 minutes from town :)

Would be cool to house share, but I'm a bit past that. Also not the most trusting of people.

Those two flats there are prime examples of good value, pretty amazing you can get something at that price in the center of town... I'd be perfectly happy with one of those.

You could free wheel a bike to town from Redland, it would be a bitch of a climb back though! It takes me 10 minutes to get from Redland to the Cumberland Basin so I'd say 15 minutes to Temple Quay assuming that's where you will be based.

For 1200 you could get a really nice place. I had a 2 bedroom flat for half that (albeit in staple hill). I'll second the recommendation of Redland. I think Clifton is overrated and prefer the quieter streets Redland offers. Unless you can afford a place on the crescent in Clifton Village of course :p

Driving in the centre is a pain unless you have private parking or your company will cover it. Buses are quite reasonable and have good coverage, even if they're a bit unreliable!

Bristol is great fun though, you're going to love it.
