120Hz vs 1440/1600p

120hz for me, though if those 21:9 2560x1080 monitors come with 120hz I most certainly will be moving to one :)

1440p IPS for me. I prefer vibrant colours, stunning image quality and better viewing angles over the small percentage of the time where I'd see the negligible benefit offered by 120hz.

I love my Dell U2711. I'd never switch it for anything else (well except maybe for a 30" Dell monitor of similar quality) now that I am used to it.

I use both.

For games I could not go back to 60Hz, I have tried and it just does not work for me. However for everything else I use my 30" Sammy (its actually a PVA).

Honestly though if I could only have 1 then I would just go for a quality IPS panel as they are a good all rounder. Unless of course you are building a pure, dedicated gaming rig for nothing else.

There have been a number of these threads in the past. They start off with a simple question by the OP and then they are presented with a fairly even spread of replies siding for either one. ;)

It is really based on your personal preferences and how sensitive you are to responsiveness. If you haven't used particularly responsive monitors recently (CRTs or 120Hz TN panels) and you aren't too sensitive to pixel and input latencies then you may well benefit more from the IPS option. There is a bit of 'you don't know what you're missing' either way, literally, if you have had no or limited experience with either. As somebody who has had pretty even experience with both sides of the coin I am another user who uses both for different things. I know - helpful huh? :D

I saw no real benefit from 120hz so switched to 1440p and have never looked back

it's a very personal / subjective thing... if you can work out a way to try both to see which you prefer then that would be your best bet (*cough* dsr *cough*)

Size plays a role to, if you're comparing a 27" 120Hz screen (which by default is only full HD) to a 27" 2560x1440 monitor then personally I'd say there is no comparison as Full HD on 27" makes things like websites look like a seeing eye test where they start with the biggest size. Fonts are so huge that it just looks horrible imo. The 23" (Samsung) and 24" (BenQ XL2420T) look a lot better to me.
As I don't play many fast paced games I'm sticking to my lovely 2560x1440 monitor anyway.

What it comes down to is what do you prefer, this really isn't a decision you can make based on the opinions of others. Check both options out and stick with what you like best.

This. If i wasn't predominantly an FPS player I'd go for the high res rather than the fast refresh rate. 60hz in FPS games is disgusting after using 120hz!

I just got one of the OCable catleaps - just tried it at 120hz and its doing it - however there's a bit of a buzz, much less noticeable at 100hz 2560x1440 :)

actually the buzz is only really noticeable with the browser window open, can't hear it on desktop

I luv my 120hz BenQ XL2420T once you have the color calibration set correctly its amazing for FPS games. I game every night and there is no way I could ever go back to 60hz.

If your not a gamer go for IPS
