First use of the Internets and Mobiles

My first mobile was a Nokia 101 in 1994 and i still have it in its original box.

Cost £99 and rental was about £11.99 a month if i remember rightly.

My first time on the internet would have been 1996. Or rather, my Dad showing me it on our Win 95 pc because I was 6 at the time. I didn't really know what I was being shown, just that I could find out stuff. I already loved computers though, so I was still interested.

First time I had a phone was in 2001, I had my brothers old... Motorola V220e or something. It had blue and pink changable rubber covers and was pretty cool. It did resemble a fake bone that a dog would chew though...

I'm still stuck on not calling them icons in 1994..

what else would you call something which was an icon?

Well considering it was the first time we had ever seen the internet and nobody had given us a guided tour including any internet terminology, I doubt we would have drummed up the word icon on our own?

God, I miss those days. When you went out with people and you just stayed with the people you were with. No phones on tables. No-one having conversations with others people on the phone, no-one going outside to take calls. People not cancelling at the last minute because they couldn't.

I hate mobiles.

Agreed. However the positives of mobiles are also worthwhile.

As for the op.

First went online probably around the same time. 1994-1995.

People started to get mobiles around 1997 - with an aerial you had to extend! Got myself a mobile in 2000. A Nokia 3210!!!!!

the first time i saw the internet in action was round someone's house, they were family friends I think, he showed us a few web pages. I took it all in but it didn't seem exciting to me.

My parents got CompuServe and a modem and i got more into it, although only really to use email to friends. It was only when freeserve came along and i had my own phoneline and computer that i became hooked. Long nights playing planetarion, counter strike and startcraft.

First mobile was 3210, great phone and it still works!

The whole Windows environment was called WIMP (Windows, Icons, Maps & Pointers) so they were icons back then.

1993 I seem to recall.

Think I did them both around the same time. Phone was an Ericsson EH237 Etacs thing which lasted a whole day if you didn't use it. Some disk off the front of a magazine and long distance calls to cambridge for the internet.

My first mobile was a car phone, then I bought a Mobira for loads. My dad had his first phone in the mid 80's! Internet was mid 90's I think.

Hmmm ... first internet access (non-email at least) was around the end of '93 at Uni ... a friend of mine showed me how to download Doom shareware from Imperial College's public ftp server. Back then mostly used usenet and email mailing lists rather than the web, although of course I did create a small, really bad Geocities site :). It seems odd now but I used to have internet at Uni but then none over the holidays so I'd have to remember to unsubscribe from mailing lists prior to the summer break to prevent my mailbox from filling. Finally got internet at home when I started work in '97.

Probably got my first mobile phone in '97-98 again when I was at work. My Dad is still using my second phone (Nokia 5110 I think) from ~'99.

South Africa was slow on the uptake, so internet first time was 96 at my mum's work, didn't get dial up at home until 98. Got my first mobile in 99.

first internets was about 1993? 9600 baud modem on compuserve, went on lucasarts website and it took about 10 mins to download the jpg on the splash screen

you couldnt use the internet in those days when the USA was awake because it just slowed down to nothing lol

first mobile was my dads - analogue jobby, battery lasted about an hour and you could only use it inside the m25!

Was that true? I remember my dad saying that it was slower when America was awake but I didn't really believe him.

I think it was about 92/93. Not entirely sure. It was an old Apple Mac with an external modem. Barely remember it though.

Must've been late 90s for me. Gateway 2000 and AOL chatrooms were the order of the day not long after, but I think I was too busy playing Putt Putt via DOS to really understand what I had at my fingertips when we first got the PC.

First phone wasn't until I was 16 (2002?) purely because I didn't want one. I just used mates' phones as we were always in the same place anyway (boarding school), but I got some rubbish motorola thing to call home eventually.

Don't remember first time went on the internet but must have been at a friends house or at school. First time i got internet was 1997, 33.6k modem. 15 years online this year :D

I was one of the die harder who refused to ever get a mobile phone. I think my first one was in 2003.

For the life of me I cannot put dates to when I was first online. My very first experience of the Internet was via an Amiga A500+ and a US Rebotics 9600 modem. Becuase of no form of fast storage, the experience was pretty terrible.
That same year I took a PC online, so that would have been along the lines of a 486 SX-25. At least there was some HD space, although the 9600 modem still remained.

As for phones, anyone remember the company "People's Phones"? I had an old NEC handset from there.

I was quite late to the internet. The first time for me was when i tried it on my dreamcast. My first mobile phone when i was about 16-17, rarely used it and i still never use my mobile now.
