Hey all, finally made the leap and got a 3930k, selling my ipad so I won't feel as bad for forking out an additional 400 to what I sold my kit for :P Anyways, I can't decide on a cooler, I've looked at the obvious, Noctua Nh-D14 which I can pick up for £49.99 with a discount, but will it fit in my Raven RV02 case with 4 (8 in the future) sticks of Corsair Vengeance ram with heatspreaders? And a HD6950? Would it block the opportunity to run 2/3 HD6950-sized cards in this case? I want a good cooler that is quiet (I'd prefer less noise than ultra good cooling) I'm only going to clock it to around 4.4ghz eventually, For now I'm running stock but I want to overclock it and see what I find a good speed.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!
Ste

If you have tall RAM then almost any air cooler will be an issue to fit.

The safest option to ensure the RAM doesnt get in the way is a closed loop water cooler (H80/Kuhler920)

Concur, I have same chip and a water block or an all in once water system is definately the best way to go. Quiet and much much less room.

I am on water and easily get 4.8Ghz on mine and queit as a mouse.

No problems with SLI RAM or case cooling.

Pick up a H60 / 80 or H100 if you are fearful of custom loops.

I have had the H80 before - It was a very good cooler. However, My Raven case is more suited for air I hear, hence I wanted to go air cooling. I'll probably just buy another H80, or just get the Arctic Cooling I30 which is pretty good and damn cheap.

Hold on a sec,

You were looking into getting a motherboard/CPU+RAM bundle.

So you don't have the RAM yet correct? so you could make sure the RAM you do buy is low-profile.

No - I've just ordered some G.Skill Ripjaws Z 1866 with heatspreaders :( they were on sale. I've ordered from 2 different companies - they should be here wednesday/thursday. So far I have paid for the Ram, CPU and Motherboard. Need to pick a cooler and I'll probably end up getting the Akasa Venom Voodoo as I know this will fit, or the Arctic cooling i30. I just wondered what the best "bang for buck" quite cooler was that wasnt massively over the top huge in size.

The RipJawZ aren't too tall. My K2 fits fine with those modules installed. If you can stretch to the K2, do that. Otherwise a CM612S is a good budget option, as is the Thermalright True Spirit 140.

I cant keep up, I thought your post said you bought Vengeance RAM with the heatspreaders?

Do you know what you have actually bought? lol

Any pics?

Front fan wouldn't sit flush, but the heatsink does clear it.

Front or rear, you'd just raise the fan a bit.
Personally, since the heatsink/fans cover the ram anyway, I'd just remove the heatspreaders seeing as their looks wouldn't be very viewable.

Edit; Like so: Front fan sits flush with the bottom of the heatsink.

Ugh, that gpu is 3 days old and look at the residue left from the sticky plastic wrap...

That's the max height. As long as the heatsink clears the ram, it's all good if your side panel doesn't clash.
This is why I can't mount a 140mm fan at the front with my case and ram as it'd sit at this height and clash by a few mm.
With ultra lo-pro stuff like Samsung green it wouldn't be an issue as that sits lower than than the ram clips.

A bigger case would solve it all lol.

Yeah sorry I meant rip jaws z lol. As long as they fit with the k2 I'm confident they'll fit in anything. What is the best cheap one then? I know the k2 is good but I can't find a cheap one...

It's only £10 over your budget and you should qualify for free postage here :)

I'd say it's worth it.

Actually, having looked at the raven case airflow layout, I reckon you could easily get away with running just a centre fan on the cooler. Actually, you could run just a centre fan in any case with half decent airflow.
In fact, you could run the thing without any fans at all for most non-extreme situations.

just checked my bank, only got £40 left to spend on a cooler :( what can you guys recommend? I keep getting told the akasa venom voodoo 2011 for 39.99 from various sites, but really I'm trying to find one that is the quietest OC'd at 4.2ghz.

Worth waiting until the cash is there maybe?
You have a premium case and a very premium cpu, why not get a premium cooler to go with it? :)

Or there's the Thermalright True spirit 140 for £39.95 which isn't exactly poor quality and very quiet :D

EDIT: The True 140 doesn't appear to be socket 2011 compatible :( Unless someone can correct me.

The K2 is compatible, and I think it'd work very well on an SB-E chip seeing as the heatsink base is clearly designed with larger chips in mind.

On my 2500k, the outer couple of pipes don't even make contact with the cpu due to the extra width required to fit all 8.
It still cools brilliantly though, and your chip would take full advantage of it.

EDIT 2: Duh, there's a socket 2011 retention kit for the True 140 right next to it in the listings. £3.98.
