Asda announce fuel cap

For all those who are trying to remember what you used to pay:

I remember filling up my bike for $6.50 and going 140 miles. And that was when it was $2 to the £.

I also remember when fuel hit 99p, and I was like "there'll be riots if it goes over a quid!" and now it seems so cheap :(

A few months ago we were ecstatic when Morrisons was only £1.32

...Just a thought...

Do you think having proper fuel protests would make any difference?

I don't mean a load of nay sayers saying we will do it and they never do, I mean proper fuel protests - HGV's and Tractors doing 'go slows' on all the major roads, blocking oil refineries etc etc?

Would that work now in 2012?

...Just a thought...

jesus you men are lucky its 141 - 144.9 near me :(

It was always more back in NI, even when it was overall cheaper to nip over the boarder and buy it down south :(

Most places can just get away with it through lack of choice, though it always made me laugh of who "knew someone" who would pump it from a shed... (probably the more likely reason it is more)

To GOOGLE!

Edit: Okay found it. So for a litre of unleaded fuel at 132.9p the cost breakdown is:

Fuel Duty: 57.95p
Product: 47.8p
VAT: 22.15p
Retailer/Delivery: 5p

It's annoyed me for a while that we pay double tax on fuel. The government adds fuel duty and then VATs the whole thing so you pay VAT on Duty i.e tax on tax :(

If they removed the VAT on Duty alone, it would drop the 132.9p you mention to about 121.4p i.e. 11.5p less per litre!!!

If you wanted to get done for terrorism :(

Aren't they not allowed to protest like they did 10year ago?

Wasn't that made illiegal somehow...?

Something needs to be done, the cost of being on the road is a total joke, but can't be helped.

They say get a bike, walk, get public transport. Total p*** take. Not everyone lives in a city centre

To commute to my University (which isn't a million miles away) with public transport is three train changes or 4 bus changes + a tram ride.

Public transport isn't up to the task regardless of where you live.

I'm literally ecstatic that I might save about £2.20 on my next 90 ish quid tank of petrol.

Why has it gone up so much in the last 5year?

Because the oil price has increased by 50% whilst at the same time the value of Sterling against the Dollar, in which oil is bought and sold, has fallen significantly.

5 years ago oil was $80 a barrel and you got $2 : £1. So, a barrel of oil was £40.

Today a barrel of oil is $110 but you get only $1.6 : £1. So, a barrel of oil is almost £70 - nearly twice as much.
