chrisboardman bikes

Don't brand everyone with a different opinion to you as a troll

You have a very ill informed opinion, and clearly not someone who gives a monkey's about bikes/cycling - hence why that statement can be construed as trolling, so don't get your nips all chafed because he called you up on it.

Let me put it this way - if someone were to stroll into the cars sub forum and made a similar response to yours (uninformed and claiming not to care about cars) - what would you have said?

Personally don't like the bikes, but they offer incredible value - relatively speaking to the rest of the market, across their entire range.

ps: I lack the knowledge of cars to make a bike/fiesta upgrade simile, but I'm sure there is one :)

Just looked online at Halfrauds at the Boardmans, after reading they seem to be good value for money.

Can anyone help a noob pick a bike? I'm after a road bike, but has the ability to go off road. I think these are "Hybrid" or "Cross" bikes?

Thanks

It's a fair compromise to it's usability on the road to have a bike capable of going off road, just think carefully and make sure you'll definitely be going off-road before you buy else you'll be cursing yourself when you're struggling up a hill!

Can't help with actual bike choice unfortunately, but I know the Boardmans are pretty darn good.

The main use will be footpaths and roads to be honest. Mainly the bike will be used for fitness and commuting. However I don't want to be limited to just tarmac. I'm not sure though, I'm not the expert!

Already have a mountain bike in the garage. I suppose that could be fixed up to be used if I ever have the desire to go off-roading

The quality of Halfords staff varies hugly, personally i think most people who are going to blow £700 upwards on a Boardman, are doing so because they've read many reviews and know about the bike and what it offers, not because they've rocked into the store and have no idea what to buy.

For example, i researched for many weeks before blowing 1.3k on my Boardman, the in store staff didn't play into my decision.

Yes but I heard some horror stories about them setting up the bikes, did they build yours?

I think Halfords is to cycles what PC World is to computers! But for some odd reason Chris Boardman exclusively sells his excellent range of cycles through Halfords, Surely he must be aware how frowned upon they are and of there poor reputation?

Halfords sell a massive percentage of the bikes bought in the uk. That's why you'd want to go exclusive with them.

It's not a boutique brand, selling through one of the largest bike retailers to their target market makes sense entirely.

If I were you I'd get the mtb fixed up for off-road use, and get a dedicated road bike. Once you're fitness levels increase you'll see the joy of hooning it around on a proper road bike. You know how you'll use it tho, that's just what I'd do.:)

A good CycloCross is head shoulders better than any hybrid.

They're also generally considerably more expensive than hybrids, which is something to bear in mind.

I think I'm leaning more towards road bike. Will be heading up to Evans tomorrow, so will have a browse and get some more information.

Cheers
