I have about 4.5k to spend on a car (19 yr old)

Jealousy is a bitter mistress.

Sorry your wrong if anything its more selfishness on my part than anything, I'm just trying to cut down the amount of 17-21 year olds buying cars they can't handle which bumps up insurance for everyone else when they crash... I'm not saying this guy will crash but the chance will be higher.

Stupid insurance, I wouldn't bother.

I got insured on my 1.8 MX5 (140bhp) for £1300 when 20, and that was a kick in the balls. Still it basically halved when I turned 21 :D

I would not waste so much money on a luke warm hatch that really isn't worth so much in insurance.

am I the only one that is amazed a 19 year old wants to spend around 8k on a first car?!
especially a hot hatch... no matter how good a driver you think you are, it would be wise to get some more driving experience with something less expensive imo

If I could afford it when I was that age, I wouldn't have thought twice about it.

Exactly. This guys obviously wants to get something more exciting as his car, fair play if he can afford £4K for insurance. The people who are saying he will crash because he's young etc well that's why his premium is £4K! If the insurance company is covering him, it doesn't really matter what you think does it?

Shock horror as sporty hatchbacks appeal to teenage male.

My 19 year old brother has insured my old Micra ('owned' by Dad since 2005) for <£700.
No points or claims and 2 years driving, but no NCB either.

OP you are getting some MENTAL quotes!!! Avoid a sporty (or sporty looking) hatch!

seriously?!

I must have had my priorities all wrong at that age then - its not just a case of being able to afford it, is there anyone on here that had a first car that lasted well?
it's a learning curve owning a car, especially when you are young - in my group of friends we all had sheds as first cars and we really ****ed about with them, cars got scratched, spewed on/in, maintenance wasn't always done on schedule etc - all i'm saying is that driving and ownership experience should be the priority rather than spending all that money in one go, even half that budget would be fine for a first car (that's still more than my mortgage for a year!)

My first car was a £200 <20k hyundia that I drove everywhere like I stole it. Had more bumps in that car than I can remember, eventually I wrote it off on a roundabout. At least if you go cheap you can just throw it away and the insurance doesn't need to know.

I think the most I ever paid in insurance was about £1500, I just can't imagine paying 3 or 4k for it, that's just crazy talk.

oh. Yeah I know the st and clio are, thought the swift was quite sneaky

what would you recommend

Check out a Mazda 3 Sport, can get a very good facelift 2006ish version in your budget. 2L and 147BHP so nothing to be sniffed at, and because it's uncommon insurance quotes are a lot cheaper than Fiesta etc.

I don't think I could stomach my parents paying a quarter let alone half of any of those quotes...

Get a nice looking low capacity car and run it for a year or two while you're truly learning to drive. Don't run before you can walk.

I did that and my insurance is £360 this year at 23 and wasn't that much more when I had a ST at 21.

Straight line speed is only so much fun. I had both a Swift Sport and an EP3 Civic Type R and whilst the Civic was loads quicker, the Swift was more fun to blast about the lanes in.

I honestly cannot see the point in paying so much for insurance unless £4k plus is somehow peanuts to you and your family. If it is indeed peanuts, well hell with it - enjoy yourself.

e.g. I don't need an i7 2600k with 16gb 2200mhz ram. But I have it, and I am pleased I have it.

i don't need a dell u2711. I was quite content with my lil samsung syncmaster 20". But I dropped £600 on one, and I am glad I did.

In theory decisions like these look like a waste of money but if you're happy in the long run that's what matters. It's just hard to bite the bullet

That is a terrible analogy and not even comparable to buying a car and spanking nearly the same cost on insurance.

Its obviously not peanuts though is it or the car budget would be higher. If its peanuts you can do better than a Fiesta, if you can't (like most of us buying first cars!) then £4k on insurance is frankly ridiculous.
