I have about 4.5k to spend on a car (19 yr old)

Sorry about the previous jibe. I've looked for a couple of lesser known cars that might appeal.

Corolla insurance quick quote on a 19 yo male is 1150-1550.

Audi S3 insurance 1200-1600

CTR insurance 1200-1600. (Not really 'lesser known' though!)

Although I'm beginning to think the autotrader insurance quick quotes are utter rubbish.

it's alright. thanks for taking the time to look

ideally I want under 60k miles to avoid any potential problems with the car early on, just to be on the safe side :) so that rules out the S3 and the CTR. The corolla I don't really like the look of.

I will look further into the CTR as they look quite cool

LOL insurance!

I spent £2.4K on insurance when I was 17/18 on a Saxo VTR :(. Couple of years no-claims and a Multicar policy then meant I paid £750 for a Clio 182 at 21.

Whats this car going to be used for? Going to visit maccy d? Going to work? Going to the ring?. I personally wouldn't buy a juicy car if I didn't intend to go on long spirited drives/track days etc. If its popping to the shops etc it really isn't worth wasting the money on insurance + Fuel.

ok, I understand what you're saying

therefore, being the slower out of the 3, but still very agile (from what I have read) and looks pretty good too, perhaps the swift would be a good bet?

Also I just want to point something out here guys, just because I potentially would have a 'fast' car, doesn't mean I would drive recklessly in it. The last thing I would or would want to do would be to live up to these stereotypes of a lot of idiotic drivers my age (mostly chavs) trashing their car.

Nobody here knows you well enough to know if you're responsible enough to handle such a powerful car. Much like the insurance company, they are just making a judgement based off your age and driving experience. However, at least take the hint in to consideration; 19yo male with one year's driving experience + Fiesta ST = a potential mess. You might be an exception, or you might be overestimating your abilities. Under the circumstances, you need to be sure that you're being honest with yourself about your ability to handle the vehicle. The people most likely to crash are the people that aren't honest with themselves, that are caught up in automotive lust and tell themselves that everything will be fine. Don't be that person. That's the warning you're getting here.

As for insurance costs, I'd forget about the fact that my parents are paying half the insurance. It's too easy to take that for granted and just see the cost to you. Paying £1300 for a year's insurance on a Swift Sport isn't bad, but that's not it's real cost. If they weren't helping you and you had to pay the full £2600, would you? If the answer is 'no' then you aren't being very responsible with your parents' cash.

I bought my first car yesterday; a 1.3 Swift. Bought the insurance today; £940.22 for 8000 miles with Direct Line. It's not a blazingly quick car, but my automotive ambitions are too high to go blowing a few grand on a year's insurance for a hot hatch. I'd rather keep the cash and put it towards something genuinely quick in a few years time. By then my insurance will be at a sensible level and a good deal more of my money will be invested in something tangible, rather than sitting in some insurance company's coffers. You can only spend it once. Do you really want to drop such large sums (total cost of ownership) on a warm hatch?

Doesn't this concern anybody else here?

You're a relatively new driver and young - don't worry about a care being "fast". It's really not that important. What's "not powerful enough" in your opinion?

I was gonna say pretty much this too.

Sounds like he just wants to be the generic boy racer.

My first car was a little 1.1 106. Cost me 1.1k to insure at 18 (5 years ago). Had it for one year then went uni. Got my first 'proper' car that isn't a heap which is a Citroen C2 1.4 Cool. With my NCB expiring, I thought I'd have to shell out loads, but it was around £650 for 10months which gives a years NCB. It's not the fastest car in the world, but its got enough for what I require at the moment and even then I've had a couple of 'scares' in it. Enough to make me learn.

I wrote that then realised idk what point I'm getting at so ill just stop

Agree with what's been said tbh... build up a couple years NCB don't just waste money on a pathetically high insurance cost just because you're only paying half. I was the same, I wanted a more powerful car... but waited until I had a decent number of NCB (5 now after getting half a month free NCB) and am now looking through 190bhp + cars with insurance only costing me £550-800.

*sigh*

i am beginning to think this is the right thing to do :/

Welp, I guess I am gonna have to do some research on good but less powerful cars then

thanks for talking some sense to me

As people have said, just drive something cheap, sensible and slow for 2 years. Then you will have plenty of experience, won't be bothered about scratching it/crashing it and you can save up for something faster and nicer for when you are 21 ( when you wont be so spanked by the insurance companies....you will still be spanked...but not as much :p).

My first car as a 1.4 mk3 Astra with a scrapyard engine in. From what I know the original died of head gasket failure so the owner just left it at a garage my dad knows and the owner of the garage dropped a new working engine in to sell on (who knows how many miles it had done lol). Cost me £250 and then a further 750 on insurance when I was 20 and was literally just over a years worth of problem free motoring bar consumables such as tyres until I sold it on.

I am glad I had this as my first car because at the time being a seasoned veteran with an entire year's worth of experience under my belt, I couldn't possibly imagine having an accident lol. I managed to wrap it round a wall on my drive way of all places and took a load of paint off the rear drivers side arch which began rusting almost immediately due to the cold wet weather. If i had done that in a more expensive car I'd have absolutely gutted!

Also, if you do see sense and get a less pwoerful car, just get something cheap 500-1,000 will do fine and save the rest for the better car further down the line.
