Punishment for cyclists?

That is what annoys a lot of people.

If a driver runs a red light and gets caught it a £60 fine and 3 points although maximum can be £1000 fine 6 points and possible disqualification.

A cyclist runs a red light and gets a telling off.

fair? i think not.

Blame the police not the cyclist. The punishment is the same.

Car or cycle? And why do some people think the difference matters?
Caught on camera doing it in a car, automated ticket to your registered address.
Caught on camera doing it on a bike... nothing?

I fail to see how people can't understand how this seems a little biased?

I'm going to have to pick on this post for its silliness.

As far as I am aware, the minimum speed camera limit is 30mph. Unless some local councils have them at 20mph in their reduced speed zones. Then there is the fact that 30mph speed cameras aren't triggered if you are going 31mph, it's a much faster speed.

Unless you are a professional cyclist, there are few who will be going at a speed of 35+mph to even be able to trigger a speed camera. I'll give you that on a downhill it might be possible.

You could still be charged with some kind of wreckless control of a vehicle if it warranted it. I seem to remember there was a guy on rollerblades who triggered a camera on a downhill and they brought charges against him for wrecklessness, no idea what happened though.

Ultimately my point is though that Cyclists very, very rarely trigger speed cameras, so getting in a huff about it is moronic.

Nope, you would get a fixed penalty fine. That's what they give to Cyclists I've seen caught in London. Cyclists aren't required to be licensed to be on the road so there is nothing for points to be put on.

Anyone wearing spandex, riding a bike in heavy London traffic, thinking they are in the Tour de France and blatantly breaking every Highway Code in their endless pursuit to get to the front of a traffic queue should, in my opinion, bugger off to the countryside where it's perhaps safer and there are less people around who have to see how utterly ridiculous you look.

Or, you know... You could just not drive in central london and cycle instead, or just as good make use of the superb public transport London has. I just don't get why anyone (other than builders and delivery drivers) need to drive in centralish london!

Was just an example mate as other seem completely oblivious to the info presented both before and after this post.

As above...
Cyclist runs a red gets a telling off.
Car runs a red points and fine.

I serioulsy fail to see how you think it's acceptable to ignore these things?

The problem being tho most cycliists get of scot free due to the fact of being unable to identify them.

a small reg plate on the back of their bike would prevent this.
I think this is what annoys most, the fact that cyclists seem to think they should remain anonymous whilst on the road.

Again I'd point out the actions/behaviour of the cyclist in the video above.
If I refused to provide ID it wouldn't matter as I'd be on a bike/car that has identifiable plates.

Also did anyone actually provide the details and legalities of being requested to present info to the police?

Surely if a cyclist commits an offence then the police are in a position to arrest them if necessary.

Well it is sort of, driving through a junction in a 1ton lump of metal is a bit different to doing the same on a bike. You're not really going to kill anyone on a bike.

See i really don't get this...Theres been like one cyclist in here who has said running red lights is wrong..The rest seem to endlessly try to justify it if done by cyclists :/

While a bike might not do much damage directly when running a red light, the cars that it might cause to swerve most certainly will. Bikes can cause a huge amount of indirect damage when running a red.

Did you not read above where we explained you will get a fixed penalty fine if caught by the Police, or worse if it warrants it.

I see plenty of motorists who carry on through red lights in London and get away with the same because there are no Police about or traffic light cameras.

It's ok in a car because its just amber gambling.

Wtf am I reading?

More people are injured every year by falling coconuts and defunct toasters than Sharks, yet numerous countermeasures every year are made to deal with Sharks.

I mean if this thread is descending into this kinda talk, you're not gonna win.

And numerous countermeasures are taken against defunct toasters and coconuts... My point exactly...

I'd rather see more serious punishment for car drivers if truth be told..

Ahh crap, forgot the damn rules here... edited the link due to the swearing. :(

Why do the cyclists who record videos of everything always seem to be complete psychos swearing at anything and everything they see? :p

I must say, if I engaged in an activity that turned me to apoplectic rage because people nearly killed me regularly whilst doing it... i'd just stop doing it :p

I would certainly support mandatory road cycling safety tests. Something akin to a driving license, one day practical and one day theory. It would help those who don't know/who aren't confident/who'd like to ride get the necessary training/information, while stopping those who are ignorant or useless, for the most part, being able to ride. A small badge/notice should be affixed to a bicycle as proof of passing as well as a license - maybe add it to a provisional road license.

Plus people endangering themselves, or others on the road could be held accountable and punished accordingly.
