The thing is there are hundreds, no thousands, no hundreds of thousands, perhaps even more, of true innovators that have massively forwarded mankinds knowledge and technology base, advancing mankind. Almost None of these people are ever celebrated and remembered through time. Dennis Ritchie was one such great contributor.

Within computer science itself from the top of my head I can name Richard hamming, chomsy, Haskell curry, Marvin minsky, Edgser Dijkstra, Knuth, Floyd, huffman, Richard Mary, Robin Milner, Russell, Torvalds, Turing, Charles Babbage, Backus, Tim bersrs-lee, George Boole (yes boone logic), Bourne, Rodney brooks, Alonzo church, Stephen cook, Seymour cray, Godel, John Von Neumann, Newell, and Simon, Reynolds, Claude Shannon, .....

All of these people have and some continue to give far more to society, we just don't look under the veil of modern life to observe the fabric of society. The mere fact that I can send information from my living room and share it with millions owes to people that truely contributed to mankind. I happen to send this from iPad, a piece of design but not the true innovation. What apit those who developed TCP/IP, wireless communications, network theory, routing, operating systems, compilers, pogramming languages, information theory, processor design, a whole host of electronics inventions- the invention of the transistor by Julian Lilienfield and others underlies large amounts of this. The design and construction of the iPad/honemac are really pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Depressing world we live in where true contributors are unheard of and market.ers are treated like deity.

I agree in principal, but rather than detract from remembering Jobs - and whilst I was no fan I still think he made a good contribution - why not remember others as well?

and we care because?

He accomplished great things and ended poverty and war and really pushed the human race forward.

OR created abunch of annoying hipster douchebags.

Steve jobs isn't even worth remembering, dude was loaded and made some cool products I give him that but it wasn't like he was some messiah

Anyone old enough can remember when Bill Gates was an ******** too. He wasn't always throwing all that money he has at starving people.

Bill Gates was ruthless in his day, at least he's now giving it all back to the world. If it wasn't for Microsoft's $150m bail out in 1997 Apple wouldn't even be here today.

+1

Spot on really.

I'm no apple or steve hater, great products and great business man for sure!

But I really dislike their use of foxcon for their products. We all know the stories that come out of foxcon fabs and they are rarely good if ever.

I would think a single company with more cash reserves than the US and the most valuable company on earth would be able to fairly pay their employees or outsource to fair manufacturers. Particularly when you take into account the incredibly inflated prices you pay for an apple product.

I'm sure there are parts of my PC that originate from a foxcon fab. Capacitors and all that kinda stuff. But I do avoid them where I can.

Apple is more than capable of doing the right thing and still pumping out huge profits. at the same time boosting economy wherever it sets up shop. In my mind it should.

Foxconn is an ODM. They don't make components. ;)

Unsung heroes and innovators, the way of the world it seems, I feel same way about so many people that work hard in the charity sector, I doth my cap to them all.

Marketing, fanboyism, sheep.

/thread

Marketing - Apple has less than half of Microsoft's marketing budget

fanboism - Just because a brand is popular doesn't mean that its fans are mindless sheep, other brands have far worse fanbois, see Android.

Sheep - How? Apple make great products, ones that are consistently rated at the top by reviewers and in customer satisfaction surveys. Many top people in tech and other industries use Apple products, people who don't just buy things without looking at their merits, for example Linus Torvalds and many many others.

Anyway, only a thread about Steve Jobs could turn from an RIP thread to one bashing the company he built from the ground up to be the world's most valuable company.

RIP Steve. Can't believe it has been a year.

He was the icon, and the entertainer. Tim doesn't have his pizazz nor his ability to keep things quiet. The apple keynotes are now just as boring as the rest. It's a shame :( Actual effect on products may be slim, but yeah, Steve made the company what it is.

Read the book. It's amazing.

You've been brainwashed ;):p

It's not about how big Apple's marketing budget is compared to Microsoft's. It's about how much utter BS they claim. Such as "It's the best mapping application on any mobile platform". Yeah they tried to barge their way into the mapping market with a BS statement like that, (just like they've done with any market they're in now) but it just didn't work. People aren't as stupid as Apple thought, but they have been pretty successful preying on the public's lack of information for over a decade and they will continue to do so.

Anyone can say "The most advanced" or "Radical" or "Awesome" or any other crap and get a million un-informed sheep to buy their crap. They just failed big time with Maps being "the best mapping application on any mobile platform" because absolutely everybody knows about Google Maps.

You didn't really counter any of my points i mentioned earlier but...
The BS they claim is the same as any company in the world uses, find me a company who doesn't say they are the best, how is it any worse when Apple does it?
How does Apple "prey on the public's lack of information"? I'm well informed and still choose Apple products even though I'm surrounded by other companies products all day, so do many other people who know the market inside out. Clearly the people who buy Apple stuff don't feel preyed on as they are satisfied with the products and keep coming back to Apple, which is more than you can say for other companies.

Yes the maps launch was pretty abysmal but what choice did Apple have? Google is restricting Apple by not allowing them to have turn by turn directions or vector mapping, the only choice was for them to move away from it. Creating a mapping app covering the whole earth in one shot is HARD, it gets harder when haters cherrypick screenshots where Apples maps app is worse than Google's. Yes the maps app needs improvement but it will come in time, Apple maps has some decent features: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2012/10/apple-ios-6-maps-app-hidden-features.html

Not really the full argument there.... Google were happy to supply this but they wanted their Latitude app to be allowed on Apple (location sharing app much like FourSquare) but Apple refused to allow it.

Hey, it's their phone so they can do what they like but that is not the same as Google refusing to supply it. They wanted to supply it but on their terms. Again, nothing wrong with that, GMaps is Google's product so, like Apple, they can deem how it is used.

And an abused wife will still go home to her alcoholic husband. I cannot explain that, or why people continue to buy Apple products.
Samsung is the largest smartphone manufacturer, so by your logical we can conclude that more people are satisfied with Samsung's products.

You then go on to zealously defend Apple's ****ing awful Maps product. On top of that, you even provide evidence that it is a worse product!

While users have criticized Apple for the new Maps app, it is important to note that features like vector graphics, turn-by-turn navigation have been available on Google Maps for Android for the last two years
Great. Two year old tech.

Apple - you can polish a turd.

Lol how is an abused wife a good analogy?

Personally the reason I like my iPhone is how it just works. I've had my iPhone 4 for almost 2 years, I still get regular updates (how many 2 year old samsung phones still get updates!?), I can buy a case for it from any store, I can buy a speaker from any store. If I lose it I can remotely find it. If I can't find it and I get it replaced, or if I upgrade, I switch the new phone on, put in my username and password and wait half an hour and boom, all my settings, apps, messages, everything right up to date exactly as it was before, no faffing, all backed up nightly. Even my alarm clock is still set for the next morning.

I can sync all my music to it, get my audible audiobooks, and then play it wirelessly in my car over bluetooth or on my TV/HiFI using airplay. After all that my battery lasts all day and I don't have to faf around with task manager apps or battery saver apps.
That's just the software, for the hardware it's solid glass and stainless steel, not plastic like other phones.
I couldn't do half of that on Android without some serious messing around, something I really can't be ***** to do.

My experience with Android is with my gf's phone (HTC Wildfire), it's slow and unresponsive. Last weekend it had a software update, after trying to update it it gave me some techie stuff about low memory, move some apps to SD card?! I have no idea about all that, anyway I eventually get it upgraded and now whenever someone calls her it just rings forever until you pull the battery out. Can you see why people prefer iPhone?

And no I wasn't zealously defending the maps app, Apple messed up. But people's expectations are way too high, if Apple doesn't blow away the competition then apparently it's ****. It's not a terrible app, i've used it plenty and tbh it's been better than the old app, just personal experience though.

And do you really think Apple's stuff is a turd? Well built hardware with a solid unix based operating system and excellent support? You must be deluded.
