Hi All,

I am currently looking to get a new monitor.

I'd like the size to be 27" (will happily take anything between 20" to 27").

I am running an OC'd 7970 (Sapphire Vapor-X).

I would like to do some 3D Gaming, having not done it before. But i don't think i would get too heavily into it (it's just nice to have).

I believe i would mainly use it for 2D Gaming and 2D and 3D movies.

I have about £400 im willing to spend on it, but if need be i can stretch it if worthwhile :D.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bump ------- (Sorry if bumps are not allowed, i couldn't find the rules).

I've been doing some looking around and am no nearer to deciding what i want :'(

I could choose the Samsung T27A950D, a nice 120hz monitor.

Or should i take the risk and get a Korean IPS monitor such as the Crossover 27Q or ACHIEVA Shimian QH270-LITE 27".

Someone must be able to provide me with expert advice :P

I don't think bumps are disallowed but don't worry if you don't get a response for a day or two, someone will usually answer if you are patient.

To your question, The 950d is a beautiful monitor with fantastic 2d image quality, for 2d images it is probably the best 120hz panel you could get in its price bracket imo. It is not great for 3d though if that is your thing. It is pretty good for 3d movies but 3d gaming is a bit of a letdown compared to 3d vision enabled screens like the benq xl2420t, but they require an Nvidia graphics card which you don't have.

As you are already running an AMD card though, the best HD3D 120hz monitor I can recommend you is definitely the 950d you are already looking at, no question!

Thank you for the reply :P

Just a bit excited to choose a nice monitor to complete my computer build.

One IPS monitor i'm liking the look off is the LG DM2792D-SN it appears to be quite hard to get your hands on too which strangely makes it more appealing.

Do you have any views on that one?

I have not seen that particular model before but as it is an IPS it is only going to be 60hz at the moment which will remove any prospect of 3D. I don't know how important this is to you though. On the other hand it will likely have very nice colour reproduction. I can't comment beyond speculation really as I have never seen one

Hey I may just love one of these but whats teh risks of the grade B?

Grade B can be anything from open box to missing accessories to dead pixels / backlight bleed. It is pretty much pot luck. The 750D is a nice monitor, the 950d is much nicer though IMO. You pay for what you get at the end of the day, for what it is worth however I dont remember the 750D costing that much when it was still sold new, though I could be misremembering.

The 950D compared to the 750D has one more input option which is basically what you pay for, that and the fancy looking stand. The fancy looking stand however puts a lot of pressure on the bottom right increasing the risk of backlight bleed.

Performance wise they're near identical and I'm quite sure they feature the same panel inside. So yes the 750 is basically a cheaper housing (and stand) bringing down the price but the quality should be the same or a bit better as there's less risk of backlight bleed due to the more conventional design of the stand.

im pretty sure the 750 and 950 use the same panel, i think the only difference is the stand and the 750 has no dvi input, some have had displayport issues with the 750d when waking but so far im very pleased with mine

Just saw the

Samsung S23A750D on overclockers for only 260.

This to me seems super cheap, you guys positive there is no real difference between the 950D and 750D. If not im going to buy it tomorrow :D.

Do i need any special cables to make use of the 120hz, such as a DigitalPort cable? (tho i couldnt find any).

And on a side note, would i have to buy 3D glasses seperatly?

750 and 950 use the same panel, glasses come with it, if you have a amd gpu then you need a mini to full size displayport cable, the 750 can be a bit flakey coming out of sleep mode where you have to press the source button to hdmi and back to dp, no real hardship and £260 is a bargain imo

Just to echo some of the points above and to clarify. The 950D and 750D are essentially very similar when it comes to performance, although the 750D is put under less stress due to its design so doesn't tend to suffer from the same excess backlight bleed to the extent of the 950D.

The 750D only outputs 120Hz via DisplayPort (it doesn't have a dual-link DVI port). Samsung supplies a decent DisplayPort cable - some GPUs come with a short MiniDP to DP converter which would mean you're good to go. Alternatively you can purchase this or indeed a straight MiniDP to DP cable. I have tested the 27" version extensively on a Radeon 7950 using the cable supplied with the monitor and a small adaptor supplied with the GPU. I have had zero DP issues - they are more prevalent on Nvidia hardware but do still crop up from time to time on AMD setups as well.

Thank you i ordered it last night and it has shipped today. Hopefully i should receive it tomorrow morning.

Bad news is i didn't order a short MiniDP to DP converter like you said.

My GPU is the Sapphire 7970 Vapor X which has the full Displayport input.

Will this mean i do not need the adapter? im hoping so.

Ah yes don't worry. I should have mentioned that for GPUs with full DisplayPort inputs you can just use the supplied cable. :)

Thats good news, was worried i would have to wait to get a cable.

Thank you for the heads up old gamer, i will check the review out to make sure i get the best settings on it.
