GPU for ~330-430

You could get 2x 7950s for Crossfire that would offer significantly more performance for about £450.

If that's too much, nothing is really going to give you value for money the way a 7950 will. It's about the same performance as a 670 for a lot less.

I was always under the impression that SLI only really came in to its own for use with multi monitor set ups. I have no desire to have more than one monitor, which will be a 120hz one. Also I have no experience of SLI/X-Fire is it a case of attaching the two cards together and just running a cable to one monitor from one of the cards? I take it one of them becomes the master and one the slave?

I think I should have added a massive noob alert to this response haha!

The Gigabyte WF is a great card and if you are not so much into overclocking, it is a wise buy. If you enjoy and are knowledgable in overclocking, the 7950 is a wise buy. SLI/Crossfire require a little more thought and can come with complications such as:

No SLI/Crossfire capable board
A CPU not powerfull enough and will result in a bottleneck
A case not big enough and heat being a massive problem
A PSU not powerfull enough
SLI/Crossfire support in some games

These are just a few of the problems off the top of my head.

Well I am going for a Corsair 650D case, Asus Z77 sabertooth mobo, I5 3570k and Seasonic X-Series 760w.

Also will mostly be playing BF3 with the odd game of other things so really as long as BF3 plays great then I'm a happy man!

Nice rig you will have :)

Could you answer the part about overclocking though, as this could have a bearing on what is the best way to go. As for BF3, AMD have finaly got drivers that bring the 7970 close to the 670 in BF3 (with an overclock).

If you mainly play BF3 then go with an nvidia gpu

7970 V GTX 670

No longer the case, AMD have at least caught up and possibly surpassed nvidia performance.

You should also note that AMD added more bf3 performance in the driver that was released (12.9) after this review (12.8) went live.

Bearing in mind that is but one performance review and others may show differently the point is true. Most people are reporting large performance increases in BF3 now.

Would you be able to tell the difference between a 670,7950,7970 or 680 without an FPS counter? Probably not.

+1 this, AMD have well and trully levelled the playing field for BF3

Old reviews will show different as AMD were off the ball early doors.

Show me a current review with current drivers (12.8 or later) to back up your claims please rusty or forever hold your peace.

I'll never forget when you called this review 'trash' because yours supposedly never dropped below 60fps. :p

Good times. ;)

There isn't many hence me advising caution about taking it as gospel. Without more to even out any anomalies you have to be careful. I think that's easy to understand unless you're not of an intelligent type.

I don't go below 60 FPS while overclocked but if you do then they're probably not as even as being made out.

I don't see any overclocking results there?

I fully intend to try and overclock, I would say I will definitely be asking many many questions along the way as I am yet to ever OC anything but this set up I am getting is aimed at that.

Although now I am confused as by that link there, a 6990 is beating pretty much everything bar a 690?

Also what does the GE stand for after the 7970?

Still waiting for the video of proof, but we all know it will never arrive.

I do enjoy reading your well disguised insults rusty.

Keep on the forums 24/7 mate, you're doing a good job. :)

Is that chart with everything stock and all ultra?

Yep all cards at stock+full ultra though the Nvidia cards still boost. :)

Gigahertz edition but if you want to overclock, go for the 7950 :)

+1 for the Gigabyte GTX670 Windforce 3X. I've got the 680 version of this card and the cooler is just fantastic. Even without a high end aircooling case mine never tops 55ºC. If you want to overclock and tinker then a 7970 GHz Edition.

Nice off topic posting and ignoring the point which was advising against taking one benchmark as gospel. If we did that we'd believe humbug's best mates review which put the 7970 as 20% faster in BF3. It might be faster, who can tell anyway even with an FPS counter, but 20%?! OK.

The point that they're practically even or at least within a couple to few per cent is correct. Anything else you want to troll about is getting snipped.

Folks probably counldn't tell the difference with a counter tbh ;)

Very true mate.
